Is using a smart telescope "cheating"? 🤔

We hear this debate in the shop all the time! Some say you need to learn to star-hop manually. But honestly? If "cheating" means setting up in 5 minutes and seeing the colour in the Orion Nebula from a light-polluted balcony in Toronto... then sign me up! 🌌

For a long time, the price of these robots was the biggest barrier. But that just changed. Big time.

We just unpacked a shipment from Spectrum Optical Instruments that makes smart astronomy accessible to almost everyone:

🔭 The Budget Hero: ES Astro 53 Pro It’s got a Sony sensor, an ED lens, and full WiFi control. Price: Only $419 CAD! (Yes, seriously). Check it out here: https://khanscope.com/collections/smart-telescopes

🔭 The Powerhouse: MirroSky SP127 Mak A 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain hybrid that packs a serious punch for planetary and deep sky. See the specs: https://khanscope.com/collections/smart-telescopes

🔥 PLUS: The ZWO Black Friday Sale is LIVE! Up to 15% off select cameras, AM5 mounts, and the Seestar S50. Shop the sale: https://khanscope.com/collections/zwo-black-friday-sale

Come by the shop on Dufferin Street to see these little wonders in person. We’d love to show you how they work (and prove that it’s not cheating... it’s just magic 😉).

Saturday Night Terence Dickinson Memorial Presentation, sponsored by Khan Scope Centre

We are pleased to sponsor the esteemed
Dr. Sara Seager (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
Planetary Atmospheres and the Search for Signs of Life Beyond Earth.
At STARFEST 2024 being held in Mount Forest, Ontario Canada this year by the North York Astronomical Association.

For thousands of years, inspired by the star-filled dark night sky, people have wondered what lies beyond Earth. Today, the search for signs of life is a key motivator in exoplanet research. With exquisite data from the successfully operational James Webb Space Telescope, we are now confronted with new, practical challenges of tiny signals, unknown exoplanet environments, and host star contamination. Our pace and history of milestone discovery in exoplanets in the last quarter century, combined with new telescope paradigms, promises to eventually deliver on finding signs of life beyond Earth.
Professor Sara Seager is a Canadian-American astrophysicist and planetary scientist. Born and raised in Toronto, she is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Seager's work focuses on exoplanet atmospheres and methods for detecting signs of extraterrestrial life. She has significantly contributed to the field of exoplanet research, particularly in theoretical modeling of atmospheric composition and the development of novel methods for exoplanet detection. She was the Deputy Science Director of the MIT-led NASA Explorer-class mission TESS; PI of the JPL-MIT CubeSat ASTERIA; and a lead of the Starshade mission concepts. She also focuses on missions to Venus. Her innovative approaches have earned her numerous awards and recognition including a MacArthur Fellowship, membership in the US National Academy of Sciences, an appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society Gold Medal, and she has Asteroid 9729 named in her honor. Professor Seager is the RASC Honorary President and is author of, “The Smallest Lights in the Universe: A Memoir.”

Why shop at Khan Scopes ? Let our customers tell you :

From Mehrzad Mehrvaz March 24 2024

Today, I purchased a Seestar S50 telescope from Khan Scope in Toronto, and I couldn't be happier with my experience!

From the moment I walked into the store, I was greeted with warm smiles and friendly faces. Mr. Khan, the owner of the store, took the time to personally assist me and provide valuable explanations about the telescope. His knowledge and expertise were evident, and I appreciated the tips he shared to enhance my stargazing experience.

The staff at Khan Scope were incredibly helpful throughout the entire process, from helping me choose the right telescope for my needs to ensuring that I had all the necessary accessories. They went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase and felt confident using my new telescope.

Overall, I highly recommend Khan Scope to anyone in the Toronto area looking for quality telescopes and exceptional customer service. Thank you to Mr. Khan and the entire team for making my shopping experience enjoyable and informative!

P.S. they offer certified eclipse glasses made in Germany & USA for the eclipse of April 8, 2024 (delivered within 24 hours)

Happy stargazing!

As an amateur astronomer who shares a deep appreciation for the wonders of the night sky, I wanted to reach out to you with an urgent request for support. Recently, a devastating incident occurred at the observatory and clubhouse of the local chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in Hamilton, a place I had the pleasure of visiting
several years ago when the trees were still small. They are now facing significant challenges in their mission to provide a vital public service.

The Hamilton astronomy group has long been a beacon of inspiration and knowledge, tirelessly working to ignite curiosity and promote the beauty of the starry skies above. Their observatory serves as a crucial resource for amateur astronomers and the wider public alike, enabling individuals to explore the cosmos and experience unforgettable moments of
awe.

However, this cherished facility fell
victim to a reprehensible act of vandalism earlier this month. Extensive damage was inflicted upon the observatory and clubhouse, leaving the dedicated members devastated and facing substantial financial burdens. The losses they have incurred, both in terms of equipment and structural damage, amount to tens of thousands of dollars.

I personally recall the passion and dedication displayed by the Hamilton astronomy group during my visit to their observatory. They provide an invaluable public service by creating opportunities
for people of all ages to access telescopes, observe celestial wonders, and gain a deeper understanding of our universe. Their commitment to fostering a sense of wonder and igniting the spark of curiosity is truly commendable.

At this critical juncture, the Hamilton astronomy group is in dire need of support from fellow enthusiasts like us. By making a donation, we can contribute to the restoration of their observatory, allowing them to continue providing
this vital public service to the community. The estimated costs for repairing equipment alone range from $50,000 to $65,000, while the overall expenses for rebuilding the structures are anticipated to exceed $100,000.

To assist in their recovery efforts, the group has set up a GoFundMe campaign, which can be accessed at GoFundMe Every contribution, regardless of its size, will have a significant impact on their ability to rebuild and resume their mission of inspiring others through the wonders of astronomy. If financial support is not possible at this time, simply sharing their campaign with others who may be interested can make a difference.

Let us unite as a community of amateur astronomers,
driven by our shared passion, to ensure that the Hamilton astronomy group can overcome this setback. Together, we can help restore their observatory and clubhouse, allowing them to continue serving as a vital public resource for generations to come.

Here is a link to their gofundme page:

Thank you for considering this urgent request and for your unwavering support for amateur astronomy. By standing together, we can demonstrate the resilience of our community and the enduring power of our shared love for the night
sky.

Clear skies and unwavering
enthusiasm,

Ray Khan
