What does DTH actually mean?
DTH stands for Down-The-Hole drilling, a method where a compressed air powered hammer operates directly behind the drill bit at the bottom of the hole.
Unlike top hammer drilling, where impact energy must travel through the drill string, DTH delivers percussion energy directly to the bit. This minimizes energy loss and makes DTH drilling highly effective in hard rock applications.
A typical DTH system consists of three key components:
DTH Hammer – Uses compressed air to drive a piston that repeatedly strikes the drill bit.
DTH Bit – Transfers impact energy into the rock while allowing air to flush cuttings from the hole.
Drill Pipe – Delivers compressed air to the hammer and provides rotation during drilling.
Together, these components work to create fast pe*******on rates, straight holes, and efficient drilling performance in challenging ground conditions.
