Swapped out a Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok panel this week and put in a new 200A Siemens ⚡

If those names are on your panel, it's worth getting it looked at. These breakers have a history of not tripping when they're supposed to — the circuit overloads, and the protection just doesn't do its job.

Here's the part that gets people: the one I pulled out looked completely fine. No burning, no scorch marks, nothing. The homeowner had never had an issue with it. That's normal for these panels, and it's why "it's been fine for 30 years" doesn't really tell you anything.

Going to 200A also solves the other problem with older homes — a 60A or 100A service doesn't leave room for an EV charger or a heat pump. Now there's room for whatever comes next.

Worth knowing: a lot of insurers are now charging more, or refusing coverage outright, on homes with these panels.

Big lighting retrofit wrapped up at a church in Surrey this week ⚡

Here's the thing most people don't know about old fluorescent lights: the part that causes the trouble isn't the tube, it's the ballast hidden up in the fixture.

It burns power without giving you any light. It runs hot. And it's almost always the first thing to fail — if your lights flicker, hum, or take a few seconds to come on, that's usually the ballast. Plenty of people put in fresh tubes and wonder why nothing improved.

So the move now is to take it out entirely. LED tubes run straight off line voltage and don't need one. Pull it, and you've removed the thing that was wasting energy and the thing that keeps breaking, in one go. You end up using a fraction of the power, and the lamps last several times longer — which matters here, because this ceiling needs a lift to reach and every relamp costs equipment and crew time.

One caution: pulling a ballast means rewiring the fixture. That's electrical work — flicker, early burnout, voided warranties and fire risk are all real if it's done wrong. Worth having a licensed electrician do it.

Hall's in use all week, so we worked around their schedule, moved the chairs out and put every one of them back.
