Home Hardware Stores Limited is Canada's largest independent home improvement retailer. The company is owned by close to 1,100 independent small business operators, including Fred Kwan, the owner of Home Hardware on Central Avenue in Saskatoon.
Home Hardware sells housewares, hand and power tools, plumbing and electrical supplies, paint and painting supplies, sporting goods, and automotive and farm supplies. Home Hardware stores also feature giftware and seasonal items, including lawn and garden supplies.
Fred Kwan took over Reid’s Home Hardware on Oct. 1, 1997. After he took over, Fred made customer service more of a priority, and brought in new products the store didn’t have before.
Bringing in new products can be a challenge because you then have to educate yourself and your staff about those products so you can answer customers’ questions, but Fred was up for that challenge. He was very hands on, learning about the new products, and going to as many Home Hardware customer service seminars as he could attend, applying the ideas and concepts to every facet of the business.
