After the tractor transmission let go, I had to figure out a cheap way to get back on mowing... the deck was good so making a tow behind was the obvious solution.

Learn to weld, buy some tools and get your hands dirty. Your skills will get you out of tight spots in a pinch.

Blacksmithing does not necessarily mean doing everything via hot work. While mastering the ancient skills keeps the art of blacksmithing alive, pouring every bit of knowledge, tool, and experience into your work will open doors to personalized and unique creations.

My journey with Ironworks started in 2001 when I was hired as a welder fabricator in a Quebec elevator factory. Now medically retired from the military and in pretty rough physical shape, experience makes all the difference in achieving good results without worsening my physical condition. Adding up my military experience as a rigging instructor certainly pays off and makes heavy lifting a breeze. Do not confine yourself to one way of doing things; there are often more innovative and efficient ways.

These poppies are made out of 16g sheet metal. The petals were shaped hot over the anvil horn after being textured with a narrow cross-pein hammer. The center was created using a 1/4" x 2" flat bar, which was then upset round, hot punched, and a center punch was used to make the seeds. Thin metal cools quickly and requires multiple heats to reach the desired shape.

The shoehorn is an excellent exercise for isolating material while forging it down / spreading it to specific dimensions in their respective planes. For this one, the starting material was a 1/4" x 1" flat bar measuring 15" 1/4 long, and the final result was 25" in total length.
