A few months ago, we shared our concerns regarding WestJet's decision to impose a 300 lb (136 kg) weight limit on power wheelchairs. For many individuals who rely on Complex Rehab Technology (CRT), this policy represented more than a travel restriction. It created a barrier to independence, participation, and equal access to air travel. Many power wheelchairs exceed this limit due to medically necessary features such as power tilt, recline, seat elevation, and specialized positioning systems.

Last week, the Canadian Transportation Agency ordered WestJet to discontinue its 300 lb weight limit, recognizing that the policy created a barrier for travelers with disabilities.

Thank you to everyone who advocated for change, including a special thank you to Jason Kelln, ATP, CRTS, who helped raise awareness and educate the airline on the realities of complex mobility equipment and the people who depend on it every day. His efforts demonstrate the powerful role that industry professionals can play in advocating for accessibility and driving meaningful change.
