On a very cool morning, Murray bundled up and planted flax for our guild. It is next to a small plot of wheat. After sowing, he covered it with some black earth and raked it with the back of a fan rake. Now we wait!
Be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, August 1 when you can come to Backus Conservation Area to enjoy Field to Fabric and Field to Flour events. You will be able to see the wheat being processed and made into bread. Our flax will not be ready to harvest until mid August, but you can see guild members processing flax into linen yarn and using the yarn to make many different items.

Some photos from our Indigo Dye Day, September 17. The weather was perfect and we had a great time turning lots of stuff various shaded of blue. We dyed yarn, fabric, over-dyed shawls and a purse. Dyeing hands and feet was just a bonus. We're eager to do some more next week. This is an example of how much fun you can have when you belong to a fibre arts guild.

Today was harvest day for our flax crop. Murray was pleasantly surprised that he had so many helpers. It didn't take long to get bundles tied and then laid out in the sun for several hours to start the drying process. Later in the day, the bundles were taken to the barn to complete drying before the rippling to remove the seeds. It was a good day. Flax will be our featured fibre at Field to Fabric in 2026. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to explore the process of turning flax into linen.

There was some fun with flax at our guild on Wednesday. The weather was perfect. It was raining but we were on a covered porch. Our flax is in bloom and we discussed harvesting and processing and then five ladies dressed distaffs, and did some spinning. They also tried spinning the flax from towels. I’m not sure I converted everyone to the “I love flax” camp, but I tried. We will do some more next week as we look forward to flax being our featured fibre at Field to Fabric in 2026
