When a batch fails safety testing, the instinct is often to “fix it” through additional processing. But sometimes the fix creates a bigger problem.

With benzene contamination, distillation can become a double-edged sword. Reheating product at high temperatures may trigger further degradation and potentially create more benzene during the remediation process itself.

Because benzene levels are often capped at the limit of detection, even small changes in processing conditions can leave you with unsellable inventory and no clear explanation why.

To reduce risk:
✅ Build SOPs that account for temperature-sensitive degradation
✅ Identify contamination sources early
✅ Avoid unnecessary high-heat remediation when possible
