OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts: What’s the Difference?

🔧 OEM or aftermarket—which should you choose?
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are manufactured to the vehicle manufacturer's original specifications. A recycled OEM part originally came from a vehicle and is being given a second life.

Aftermarket parts are manufactured by companies other than the original vehicle manufacturer and can provide another option for your repair.

The best choice can depend on the part, vehicle, repair and budget.

Ontario Auto Salvage supplies both quality recycled OEM and aftermarket automotive parts, and our knowledgeable team can help you explore your options.

What Do Wheel Grades A, B & C Mean?

🛞 Shopping for a Recycled Wheel? Know the Grade
At Ontario Auto Salvage, wheels are graded according to their cosmetic condition so you can choose the option that works best for your vehicle and budget.

🟢 GRADE A — Excellent Condition
Minimal cosmetic wear with possible light surface scratches. Usually the best condition available for that year and model.

🟡 GRADE B — Good Condition
May have visible scratches or minor curb rash. A great option when appearance isn’t your highest priority.

🔴 GRADE C — Fair Condition
May have noticeable curb rash, scratches, oxidation or finish peeling. Often ideal for budget-conscious repairs, refinishing or winter tire setups.

Not sure which grade is right for you?

Give us a call. Our team can explain the condition of the wheel available and help you choose the best option.

Why Doesn’t My Electronic Part Work Right Away?

⚡ Bought an Electronic Part? It May Need Programming

Many modern vehicles—especially 2013 and newer models—require certain electronic components to be programmed or coded before they will operate properly.
This can include:
🔧 Engine Control Modules — ECM/ECU
🔧 Body Control Modules — BCM
🔧 Instrument Clusters
🔧 Navigation & Infotainment Systems
🔧 Security & Immobilizer Modules
🔧 Other Electronic Control Units
If the part you’re purchasing is likely to require programming, we’ll let you know before you buy it.

Programming normally needs to be completed by an authorized dealership or a qualified repair facility with the proper diagnostic equipment.

Have questions before buying? Ask us. Our experienced team will help you understand what may be required.

🎨 Why Doesn’t the Colour Match Exactly?

Even when a recycled body part has the same factory paint colour or paint code as your vehicle, it may not be an exact match.

Over time, vehicle paint naturally changes because of:
☀️ Sun exposure
🌧️ Weather
🛣️ Road conditions
⌛ Age and normal wear

This means two vehicles that originally left the factory with the same colour can look slightly different years later.
For the best results, we recommend having recycled body panels professionally colour-matched and painted by a qualified collision repair or auto body shop.

💡 Good to know: We focus on supplying quality recycled OEM parts. While we can often provide a part in the same factory colour, an exact colour match cannot be guaranteed.

Questions? Our team is happy to help.

Where Can I Find My VIN?

🚗 Where Can I Find My VIN Number?
Your VIN — Vehicle Identification Number — helps us identify your exact vehicle so we can find the correct part.
You can usually find it in one of these places:
🔎 Driver’s Side Dashboard
Look through the windshield at the lower corner of the dashboard.
🚪 Driver’s Door Jamb
Open the driver’s door and look for the manufacturer information sticker.
📄 Vehicle Registration or Ownership
Your VIN is also listed on your vehicle documents and insurance paperwork.

Can’t find it? Give us a call. Our team can help you locate it or determine what other information we need.
