How many gears does it take just to change spindle speed on a conventional lathe? Inside a traditional headstock, you may find multiple shafts, gear sets, selectors, bearings, and lubrication lines—all working together to create different spindle speeds. Every speed range depends on the correct mechanical combination. That means more parts to lubricate, adjust, inspect, and eventually repair.

The Smart Lathe uses a much simpler drive approach: a controlled motor with a belt-and-pulley system instead of a headstock packed with speed-change gears. Instead of stopping the machine and changing mechanical selectors, the operator enters the required spindle speed through the control. Same machining job. Far less mechanical complexity between the motor and the spindle.

Operating a manual lathe is not without its risks! Stopping at the right point depends heavily on operator timing, and if the operator is distracted or tired, their reaction time might be too slow and a tool may end up crashing into the shoulder ... or worse!

You’ve got a batch of parts to make. A CNC lathe is good for this — fast, efficient, and consistent. You’ve got a repair to do, or a one-off part to make. A manual lathe is more suited to this. So what does that mean for your shop? Do you need to own both a manual lathe and a CNC lathe for the various jobs you do?

No, you don’t.

The Smart Lathe eliminates the need for multiple machines by giving you options based on the type of work that you’re doing. You can run it manually, like a traditional lathe, when you’re doing repairs or making special parts. You can run it using automated cycles, letting the machine do the work for you. This is also good for one-off parts or repair work, and it’s excellent when you need to make batches of the same part. If you want to operate the Smart Lathe as a CNC machine, with cycles pre-programmed in G-code, you have that ability too.

Starting your day shouldn’t mean starting completely from scratch! With the Smart Lathe, there’s no long manual startup routine and no need to prepare a CNC program before you can begin working. Power it on, choose how you want to work, and get started. The Smart Lathe also remembers the last settings you were using, so if you’re using automatic cycles and you're coming back to the same job, you don’t have to set everything up again. Turn it on, pick up where you left off, and get back to making parts.

One of the best upgraded that you can add to a conventional lathe is a Digital Readout System. It makes tool positioning much easier and eliminates the need to rely only on handwheel dials or indicators. You have plenty of choices! Different brands, displays, scales, and systems for almost any machine. Here's the catch ... a DRO needs precise installation and alignment. Hardware can cost thousands of dollars, and a proper setup can push the total to around $5000. Even after installation, exposed scales and cables remain vulnerable to chips, coolant, and damage. It's still an external system.

On the Smart Lathe, there's no separate DRO to install. Position feedback is already built into the machine through its encoder-based control system. It works like a DRO, but gives you more flexibility. Choose the coordinate system and customize what you see on the screen. Each tool can have its own calibrated coordinates, so the machine keeps the correct reference when you switch tools.

If you already know how to run a lathe, the Smart Lathe immediately feels familiar. You still see the same basic layout — headstock, spindle, and a familiar working area. The carriage and apron-style structure are right where a machinist expects them to be. The tailstock is still there, and the operator works from the same familiar position at the machine. Now, familiar doesn’t mean limited. The same machine can also run automated cycles for common turning operations ... and when the job calls for it, full CNC capability is there too!

Familiar lathe layout. Manual control, automated cycles, and CNC capability — all in one machine. It looks like a lathe, feels like a lathe, and works the way machinists already understand — just with more capability.
