Lotek, Through Young Eyes 🎨
A few weeks ago, someone on our team couldn’t get their 10-year-old son to go to school.
So he came to the office instead of staying home to play video games.
“No screens. No video games. You’re going to be bored.”
He brought paints and crayons.
“I’m going to draw,” he said.
At one point he asked, “What do you do?”
He was surrounded by the buzz of what we do— wildlife tracking, GPS collars, satellite tags, firmware updates, battery life calculations…
The usual workplace chatter.
Something clicked – he opened his notebook and started drawing.
Not antennas.
Not circuit boards.
Not satellites.
Instead, he drew what he thought Lotek meant.
A bird.
A deer.
A shark.
A fish.
And our name, written big and bright above.
It stopped us for a moment.
Because that’s exactly it.
At Lotek, we talk a lot about fixes, transmissions, sensors, and data.
But when you strip it all back, what we’re really building is something much simpler:
Tools that help protect wildlife.
Tools that help researchers understand migration, survival, and habitat.
Tools that help managers make better decisions.
Tools that help keep wild places… wild.
Seeing our work through a child’s eyes was a reminder of why we do this in the first place.
Not just for today’s field season.
Not just for the next study.
But for the next generation of scientists, conservationists, and explorers.
Maybe even the kids who are drawing wildlife at the kitchen table right now.
Because if we do our job well, there will still be animals to study, track, and protect when it’s their turn.
And honestly — that’s the goal.
For the wildlife scientists of tomorrow – and for everyone committed to Advancing Wildlife Science.
