Our team had the opportunity to attend the Demystifying AI for Small Businesses workshop yeaterday.

A big thank you to Avery Swartz CEO and Founder of Camp Tech for leading such a practical and professional session. The workshop was hands-on and full of key takeaways that we can start applying in our business right away.

We also appreciate IION - Innovation Initiatives Ontario North and The Corporation of the City of Temiskaming Shores for hosting an event that helps local companies understand how tools like AI can improve productivity.

At WabiCorp, we’re always looking for practical ways to work smarter. As we move forward with new automation initiatives in our foundry, learning how AI can support our operations and decision-making is an important part of that process.

Events like this help turn a big topic into practical tools we can use today — and that’s exactly the kind of progress we like to see.

And we should also mention the fruit and sugary treat trays were excellent - no one went away hungry.

Today we’re shining the spotlight on Jeremy Birnie, CEO and owner of Wabi Iron & Steel Corp.

Jeremy has been in a leadership role at Wabi since 2008, stepping into the role of President in 2014 and becoming CEO in 2016.

Jeremy holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University and began his professional career in finance, working with HSBC and Grant Thornton. He returned to Wabi in 2009 during the economic downturn to assist with strategic growth and modernization. What was originally meant to be a short-term return quickly turned into a long-term commitment. Nearly 20 years later, Jeremy continues to drive Wabi forward, proud of how far the company has come and energized by what lies ahead.

In addition to his role at Wabi, Jeremy has a strong entrepreneurial spirit. He’s launched several ventures over the years, including a vending machine business, a storage locker company, and a Bitcoin mining operation. Still, Wabi remains his primary focus and passion.

When asked what he enjoys most about working at Wabi, Jeremy points to the people and the mission. “It’s incredibly rewarding to work with a team that’s building something world-class right here in New Liskeard,” he says. His long-term vision and dedication continue to shape the company’s future in meaningful ways.

Outside of work, Jeremy is a proud father of two daughters who keep him on his toes. Weekends are often filled with mini adventures, making the most of family time.

We’re proud to have Jeremy’s leadership guiding Wabi into the future!

🌟 Employee Spotlight: Johnny Daviau – General Sales Manager 🌟

Today we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Johnny Daviau, our General Sales Manager, who has been a dedicated member of the Wabi team for over 31 years!

Johnny began his journey with Wabi in August 1994, starting out in the yard cutting steel. Just a week later, he transitioned into the cleaning room, where he worked diligently for the next year and a half.
At the end of 1995, Johnny moved into Inspection and Shipping, where he continued to grow and develop his skills.

After gaining extensive experience in operations, Johnny made the move to the Sales team, serving as a Sales Representative for three years. In 2014, his leadership, dedication, and deep knowledge of the company earned him a well-deserved promotion to General Sales Manager, a role he continues to thrive in today as a key member of Upper Management.

Throughout his career, Johnny has remained incredibly loyal, not just to Wabi, but to his family. He appreciates the work-life balance Wabi has provided, allowing him to stay close to home and be present for his children’s school events and sports activities.

Johnny says "Wabi has been a great place to work for family life and being close to home. I hardly ever missed school activities or sports for both of my kids. Wabi has been very loyal to me and has treated me very well over the years.”

In his 31 years at Wabi, Johnny has only taken 8 sick days, a true testament to his commitment and reliability. Looking ahead, he plans to retire in the next 6–8 years, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and leadership.

Thank you, Johnny, for your decades of hard work, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to Wabi. We’re lucky to have you!

🌟 Employee Spotlight: Meet Steve Goulet 🌟

Steve joined the Wabi team in June 2022 as a Casting Finisher, and since then, he’s worn many hats, from Utility and Janitorial work to Warehouse and Foundry support. Always ready to lend a hand, Steve is also the backup in the warehouse whenever needed. His flexibility and dedication make him a true team player!

When asked about his favorite part of the job, Steve doesn’t hesitate: “The people.” His positive, outgoing personality makes him a valued member of the Wabi family.

Outside of work, Steve enjoys photography, hiking, and spending quality time with family and friends. He’s always up for an adventure and apparently has a strong golf swing, too! He recently took home the Longest Drive award at our company golf tournament!

Thanks for everything you do, Steve! 👏
