The Senate's new report on wildfires doesn't mince words:

"Three consecutive record-breaking wildfire seasons—2023, 2024 and 2025—have demonstrated that climate change is accelerating fire behaviour beyond the capacity of existing systems. Wildfires are now a crisis."

Canada averaged roughly 2.9 million hectares burned annually over the last decade. In 2023 alone, that number jumped to 14.6 million hectares.

The conversation needs to shift from reacting to wildfires to preparing for them.

A good read, and a long time coming.

Across Canada, Indigenous fire knowledge is helping shape modern conversations about wildfire prevention, forest health, and resilience. Research continues to show that proactive land management can reduce wildfire intensity while supporting healthier ecosystems.

As wildfire seasons become more challenging, learning from generations of observation, stewardship, and experience may be one of the most valuable tools we have.

More aircraft are important but aircraft alone are not a strategy.

As wildfire seasons become longer and more intense, conversations are shifting toward faster initial attack, better coordination, improved deployment, and more effective suppression tools.

The question isn't just how many aircraft we have. It's about how quickly we can get the right resources to the right place, and how effectively those resources can support firefighters on the ground.

The fires are changing and our strategies need to change with them.

The announcement follows the fall 2025 budget announcement of a $316.7-million investment in Canada’s aerial wildfire-fighting capacity.
