From trap to table. There’s something different about a meal when you’ve watched it come out of the water. Each crab gets checked with the Njord Crab Gauge to make sure the legal keepers head back to the lodge, while anything that doesn’t make the cut goes back in the water.

Mounting hardware to aluminum vs fiberglass requires different approaches. Aluminum can handle nuts and bolts with washers if the thickness is right, but fiberglass needs backing plates to distribute load and prevent cracking over time.

Backing plates are always recommended. It's the difference between a mount that holds for years and one that starts flexing after a season.

Different processes in machining and welding leave marks or different textures, and raw tubing has its own finish, so we use glass bead blasting to create a uniform matte finish across the entire surface. Without blasting, those differences show up after anodizing and the part looks inconsistent. The blasting gives it a uniform and controllable finish.

The hardest part of design isn't adding features - it's knowing what to leave out. Every line, every hole, every chamfer adds machine time and complexity. We cut a lot of ideas that worked fine but didn't earn their place in the final design. The version you see today is what survived that process.

Eyeballing crab size at the trap gets old fast, and BC regulations are strict. I made this gauge from the same aluminum stock as everything else - it sits in the boat, gets wet, handles saltwater without corroding, and the measurements are laser-etched so they don't wear off after a season of use. Makes it faster to check your catch and stay within regs.

Setting up production takes longer than running singles, but it's how consistent quality happens. Load multiple blanks into the fixture, confirm alignment, zero the tools, then run the whole batch with identical settings.

Each part comes out the same because they're all referenced to the same fixture. The setup time pays off in consistency - you're not adjusting between parts, chasing tolerances, or checking each one individually. This is how production manufacturing actually works.
