Every part gets cleaned before it goes out. Cutting oil, metal dust, handling marks - it all comes off with solvent and a clean rag.

A clean part shows attention to the small stuff, and it's how you know nothing got missed during inspection. This step happens after machining and before anodizing, when the aluminum is still raw.

Once the brake handle design and function are dialed in, the last step is engraving. Each one gets the Njord mark before it's bagged and ready to ship out for use on the water.

The added flexibility of adjusting the Njord rod holders height makes them fully customizable to your boat and how you like to fish.

Check out the full video on our YouTube channel to see how to make little adjustments that will make a big difference over the season.

The pivot on both the RH1 boom mount and RH2 post mount does the same thing - brings the rod closer to you when you need to grab it. Instead of reaching out over the gunnel or leaning around other gear, pull the mount in toward the boat. Makes grabbing the rod faster and safer, especially in rough water or when you're dealing with a fish that's already running.

After machining the brake handle in aluminum, it goes on the downrigger and gets used the way it will be out on the water - adjusted, loaded up, run through actual conditions. That's where you figure out if the design actually works or if something needs to change. After several iterations, we landed on a design that performs well and looks good doing it.

How often should you check your mounting hardware, and how tight should it be?

Check it more often than you think - quick visual before each trip, full inspection monthly during heavy use. Salt accelerates corrosion at connection points, especially where dissimilar metals meet. Look for white oxidation around fasteners and any looseness.

For tightness: snug it down until firm, then a gentle quarter turn. Tight enough to hold, not so tight you strip threads. If you're mounting to fiberglass, add a backing plate for extra security.

Catching issues early means tightening a bolt instead of replacing hardware.

Meet our newest brand ambassadors!

Mati and Tyler been fishing together for over 15 years, mostly saltwater along the BC coast. From trips up to Kitimat to spending time all around Vancouver Island, we’ve put in a lot of days on the water doing what we love.

We both grew up fishing with our families, and it’s something that’s stuck with us ever since. Now it’s turned into more than just a hobby it’s a big part of our lives, and something we enjoy sharing with our kids too.

These days, we’re somewhere around Vancouver Island, getting out whenever we can. Being on the water is our happy place. We’re big on running gear that lasts, especially with how tough saltwater can be. This is our second season of using Njord gear. We currently have swivel bases and Bodhran drums and we’ll be adding a few more upgrades to the boat as we go this season.

At the end of the day, we just love being out there doing what we love and putting good gear to the test.

Once we confirmed the brake handle design worked with the 3D print, the next step was programming the tool paths.

Before anything gets cut, every move the machine makes gets mapped out in CAD so the part comes out the way it's supposed to.

Being able to see it in a format you can turn, rotate, and adjust before the machine runs cuts down on wasted material and time spent machining parts that aren't quite right.

Sending parts out for anodizing is part of the process, and when parts are machined here, it doesn't make sense to toss them loose in a box and hope they don't get damaged in transit.

Instead of wrapping the brake handles in paper, I designed this insert in CAD and had it laser cut so each handle sits in its own spot on the way out and back. It's part of the process that isn't seen but helps cut down on issues that would come up if transported other ways.

When choosing between anodizing and powder coating for Njord products, anodizing made more sense.

Anodizing adds a hard oxide layer to aluminum that makes it more corrosion-resistant than bare metal. It's not a coating, it's part of the metal. You can't chip it off because there's nothing to chip.

Powder coating is a surface layer that can chip or peel, especially at edges and high-wear points. Once it's compromised, corrosion starts underneath.

I anodize everything that goes on deck. It costs more and takes longer, but it's the right choice for gear that lives in saltwater.
