Every site comes with constraints. The goal is to work through them without compromising the outcome.

For the Malone Road Subdivision Phases 1 & 2 in Ladysmith, the site presented a mix of environmental and technical challenges. Sensitive riparian areas, a creek crossing, an existing park, and steep terrain all needed to be considered.

Newcastle provided civil engineering services across transportation, stormwater, sanitary, and water systems, supporting both the initial 13-lot Phase 1 and future Phase 2 development.

Key elements of the project included:

• Designing storm outfalls that met provincial requirements and reduced erosion
• Routing services through an existing park while preserving mature trees
• Developing a culvert design sized for the full tributary area
• Extending infrastructure to support future phases without retrofit work

The result is a subdivision that supports long-term growth while working within the constraints of the site.

What's better than pancakes and our community? 🥞
We hope to see everyone on Saturday, May 16th, 2026 at Maffeo Sutton Park for a free community pancake breakfast! 🌞

🥞 You’re invited, Nanaimo 💛
Join us for One Table, One Nanaimo — a free community pancake breakfast where everyone is welcome to sit, eat, and connect.

On May 16th, from 8:30AM - 11:30AM, we’re gathering in one of Nanaimo’s most beautiful public spaces to share something simple but meaningful: a meal together.

Come by, grab a plate of pancakes, enjoy a coffee, and spend some time connecting with your community. Whether you come with friends, family, or on your own — there will be a seat for you at the table.

👉 And speaking of seats…
We currently have a maximum occupancy of 330 attendees (city permit rules — we like to keep things official 😄).
So come early, grab a seat, and help us make this a success so we can turn this free pancake breakfast into an annual Nanaimo tradition.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our local partners and sponsors 🙏

We are so grateful to:

Ready for the next step after your EIT?

We’re growing our team in Courtenay and are looking for a Project Engineer (PE-E2, PE-E3) who is ready to take on more responsibility and continue building their career on Vancouver Island.

This role is ideal if you have a few years of experience and want to:

• Take ownership of technical work from design through construction
• Work directly with clients, contractors, and project teams
• Apply your skills to real land development and municipal projects
• Continue progressing toward your P.Eng.
• Support and mentor junior team members

If you’re based in the Comox Valley or thinking about making the move, we’d like to hear from you.

Good municipal infrastructure work often goes unnoticed, and that is usually a sign it is doing exactly what it should.

One recent example is the Departure Bay and Hammond Bay Intersection Upgrade in Nanaimo. Newcastle provided civil engineering services from design through to final project documentation for this City of Nanaimo project, which included intersection signalization and reconfiguration, underground utility adjustments, and retaining structures.

Our team of civil engineers, technologists, and construction surveyors works closely with municipalities to deliver practical infrastructure solutions that support safe, functional communities.

Protecting natural systems while supporting growth takes planning.

For the Holland Creek Development in Ladysmith, environmental protection was a priority from day one. The site sits near a sensitive riparian corridor, which required careful coordination and disciplined design.

Newcastle provided:
• Civil design
• Surveying services
• Construction support
• Stormwater management planning

We worked closely with biologists, geotechnical consultants, and landscape professionals to ensure the project exceeded local environmental standards.

The result:
• 96 new rental homes
• Long-term stormwater resilience
• Protection of nearby Holland Creek
• Infrastructure designed to reduce long-term maintenance risk

This is what thoughtful land development looks like.

We had a great time at the UVic Hi-Tech Fair connecting with students who are starting to picture their future in engineering.

It was a strong opportunity to talk about our Civil Engineer in Training position and what the first few years in the industry can look like when you’re supported by the right team.

At Newcastle, our EITs are not sidelined. You can expect to:

• Work on real land development and municipal projects
• Contribute to design work in Civil 3D
• Be mentored by experienced P.Eng.s
• Gain exposure to site visits and construction support
• Build hours toward your professional designation

We’ve been working on Vancouver Island for over 30 years, and many of our engineers started their careers in roles just like this one.

If we met you at the fair and you’re interested in building your career here on the Island, we’d be glad to continue the conversation.

What if your workday could include a site visit in the morning and a walk on the beach, a bike ride, or a ski lap in the afternoon without leaving your own backyard?

Newcastle is growing our team on Vancouver Island, with openings in Courtenay and Nanaimo for:

- Civil Engineer – Team Lead
- Project Engineer (PE-E2, PE-E3)
- Project Engineer (PM-E2, PM-E3)
- Engineer in Training (EIT)

We’re looking for people who want a home base in the Comox Valley or central Island, meaningful responsibility on projects that shape local communities, and colleagues who care about mentorship, flexibility, and getting outside just as much as they care about good design.

Whether you’re building a career, a family, or both, this is a place where you don’t have to choose between meaningful work and quality of life.

If you’ve been thinking about a move to Courtenay or a change of pace on the Island, this is your sign.
