Nakusp and Area Community Forest

Last week, NACFOR took the NES grade 5/6/7 students on a hike on the Jackrabbit Interpretive Trail. We had 56 students plus teachers and chaperones, hike the trail. At the Taddy Cabin, we had lunch and completed a forestry quiz which asked students to identify tree species samples, measure the height of a tree, and age a tree.

It was a beautiful day, and always a great hike!

There are currently multiple crews working in the Wensley Creek Recreation Area on both wildfire risk reduction fuel mitigation work and salvage harvesting of some blowdown. Please watch out for machinery, crews, and obey worksite signage.

In the next few weeks, some truckloads will be hauled on Upper Brouse Road, so please be aware of logging trucks and use caution.

Ever wonder how wood is brought up a steep slope during harvesting? 🌲

This block in our Slewiskin tenure is being harvested by Badshot Enterprises Ltd. and their tower yarder.

Crews down below choke the wood to the yellow carriage, and the tower hauls up bundles to the landing. The wood was all hand fallen.

Last week NACFOR hosted a Forest Health and Post Fire Impacts Event. Thank you to Marnie Duthie-Holt, Entomologist, Ministry of Forests, for making the trip and giving us a fantastic presentation.

Marnie told us about both bark beetles and wood borers that are present in our forests, and how they impact the standing trees. These days, many trees are drought-stressed, exposed to fire, or exposed to other diseases like root rot. Diseased and stressed trees are more vulnerable to bark beetles and wood borers.

Once bark beetles or wood borers take hold, their impacts cause the tree to die.

NACFOR is proud to have helped sponsor a youth from Nakusp to attend the Wildsight Columbia River Field School 2026!

The youth paddled the Columbia River over 15 days, stopping at significant ecological, cultural, and environmental sites. They learned paddling and wilderness skills, and learned about the Columbia River Treaty.

Annually, NACFOR hosts a training day with local contractors we work with to refresh our skills on safety practices, emergency management, and best environmental practices.

NACFOR has created its own Environmental and Safety Management System (ESMS) document, which we review every year and ensure it is up to date.

Contractors review and use a field book that has quick reference for on the job site.

Huge thank you to all of the contractors that participated in the training day, to Corrin from Kootenay Safety Consulting for the drills and to Kristy Robins for a great lunch!
