Open-joint rainscreens have a catch: you can see the insulation through the gaps. Most boards need a cover layer to hide it. Cavityrock Black doesn't.

On one of Arizona State University's research buildings, the black facer was made to be seen, crisp black lines behind the joints, standing up to heat, UV and rain, with R4.3/inch of continuous insulation behind it. No extra cover layer. One less step, same clean look.

Insulating a concrete or masonry wall from the inside? Here's the part that trips people up.

Adding insulation keeps the room warm but makes the wall run colder, and cold walls are where moisture wants to sit. The instinct is to seal it out. The catch: a wall that can't dry in either direction just holds whatever moisture it starts with.

Stone wool plays it differently. It's v***r-open by design, so it does the thermal work while letting v***r move through and never traps moisture in the wall.

That frees up a smart v***r control layer to do its thing: tighten up in the cold to keep moisture out of the wall, then open when it's warm so the wall can dry inward.

Two jobs, two materials, one dry wall. Smartrock builds both into a single board, or pair Comfortboard or Cavityrock with a separate smart retarder. Either way, the v***r goes where you want it.

Thinking about finishing your basement? Start here.

1.) Deal with moisture first. Basements are damp by nature. Sort out any water and drainage before you frame or insulate. Everything else depends on it.

2.) Add continuous insulation. Comfortboard is a rigid stone wool board that sits right against the foundation, cutting thermal bridging and keeping the whole wall warmer.

3.) Fill the cavity. Frame in front of the Comfortboard and friction-fit Comfortbatt between the studs. No special tools needed.

4.) Let the wall dry. Both are v***r-permeable, so moisture moves instead of getting trapped, and stone wool won't absorb water, rot, or feed mold.

5.) Check your v***r control. What's required depends on your climate zone and local code, so confirm what yours calls for before you build the wall.

Ever wondered what insulation is actually made of? In our case, the answer starts with a volcano.

Stone wool begins as volcanic rock, mostly basalt, some of the most abundant material on the planet.
