This is the reason boiler explosions happen. Bad fusible plugs. Having low water level in a boiler is bad enough and should probably disqualify anyone from being a boiler fireman, but the fusible plug is what determines whether the boiler will explode or if the boiler will “shut itself down” without damage.

Ah yes, boiler explosions… let’s talk about ‘em. First we’ll start by talking about what doesn’t actually make boilers explode. I grant that these videos are oversimplified, but I’m trying to give people a cursory understanding of the real world circumstances around boiler explosions, culminating in the fact that they ought not to be worried about that when they go see a real steam engine. In the next video, we will talk more about what does actually make boilers explode.

I’m very thankful for my time spent with Dale when I was between 9-13ish years old. I wish I had paid more attention to his methods. He did high quality work, and his engines always ran very nicely, with well set valves, and no engine knocks. Yet there was often finishing touches that were left undone, it was more about the mechanical restoration for him than the aesthetic.
There are many great fellows restoring steam engines, but I’ve never met another one like Dale.

Chipping hammers are used by welders to chip the flux off of arc welds. Most chipping hammers are pretty simple and low quality, and these are my attempt at something better.
