The 8-ton excavators have become much more popular in the last 3 years because it's the sweet spot of being compact enough to get where the big iron can't, and it can handle a 48" bucket and excavate fast enough for most smaller projects.

Are you open-minded but have trouble justifying paying for equipment rentals?

Reframe it in your mind as bringing on a key team member or employee to take on a project.

Getting a month's access to a $200,000 piece of equipment costs about the same as the average monthly cost of a lead hand in construction. You see your lead hand or employee as a key part of keeping the project moving forward and maintaining performance.

Equipment rental, in the right application, is similar, with added benefits. The right piece of equipment costs about the same—or even less—once you factor in the CPP, EI, WCB, and benefits you're obligated to pay. And often, in the right application, it's just as effective as a lead hand by performing material handling, reducing labor and the use of other smaller, less effective equipment, freeing up workers and equipment that can be allocated to better tasks, and reducing overall labor by handling tasks faster and more efficiently.
