What are the top reasons to upgrade your RV or Boat battery system to a Lithionics Lithium-ion Battery System?

Here at Pinnacle Innovations and https://www.getlithium.com we have only been dealing with the industry leader in safety and performance lithium-ion batteries for the past 12 years. We have still not found a lithium-ion battery that exceeds the Lithionics Battery brand.

Whether you own a Boat, RV or have an off-grid holiday cabin, you will definitely see a huge increase in battery system performance and safety by upgrading your lead-acid or AGM type of battery system to an industry leading Lithionics Battery Lithionics Lithium-ion Battery System. Although the initial cost to purchase these lithium-ion batteries is higher than conventional batteries they can represent a “lower overall cost of battery ownership over time” – plus you will get all of the performance and safety advantages.
In this article I will outline the main advantages that the Lithionics lithium-ion batteries have over lead-acid and AGM batteries.

#1) Clean Voltage:
Lithionics lithium ion batteries start at 12.8 Volts (nominal voltage is usually 13.6 Volts) and continue at that voltage with virtually NO VOLTAGE SAG until the very end of the discharge cycle. As a result power features such as power windows, power door locks and electric relays operate faster and smoother. ALL ELECTRONICS, including Starters and Alternators will DOUBLE THEIR LIFE-SPAN. The Lithionics Battery will always be above 12 Volts – even when discharged fully to the maximum safe level of 90% discharged.
Lead Acid batteries start at 12 Volts and suffer "Voltage Sag" to 11V, then 10V, then lower. This puts a terrible strain on Electronics by feeding them "Brown" Voltage.

#2) Light Weight:
Our lithium ion batteries typically weigh just 20% to 25% of the weight for a comparable usable capacity of lead acid batteries. A lighter battery is ALWAYS better and in the case of many RV’s, they can be close to the licensed gross weight so when we reduce the battery weight this means greater payload capacity.

For most applications that we are replacing AGM or lead-acid batteries, the comparable Lithionics lithium ion battery system will in most cases weigh just 25% and take up just 25% of the amount of space. In some cases, the Lithionics system weighs just 10% that of the lead-acid battery system it replaces and takes up far less space.
A typical 100 Amp hour Group 31 lead acid or AGM battery weighs 55 to 70 lbs. Of this it will only have 50 Amp hours usable capacity. The comparable Lithionics battery has 130 Amp hours total of which 117 Amp hours are usable and it weighs just 33.4 pounds.

#3) Long Life**:
Our lithium ion batteries typically have a 10 YEAR SERVICE LIFE and a 20 YEAR WORKING LIFE. What this means that one of our batteries equipped with our NeverDie Protection System can last 10 years or more.

Our lithium ion batteries last 2,300 to 3,000 charge cycles at 80% to 90% Depth of Discharge and 5,800 cycles at 50% Depth of Discharge. At the end of these cycles the battery still works fine and can last many more years but it may have lost up to 20% of the original capacity. See the Lithionics Battery Cycle Life Chart graphic attached to this article.

Lithium ion does not sulfate which means that a fully discharged lithium ion battery can sit for a year with no harm to the battery. Have the peace of mind by eliminating a potential failure in your RV vehicle or Boat for many years.

A typical lead acid battery has 200 to 300 charge cycles before the battery begins to lose charge efficiency, voltage and capacity. When this happens, the battery becomes weaker and weaker and typically needs to be replaced. Also, if a lead acid battery is not used it may "sulfate" and need to be replaced much sooner. AGM batteries are somewhat better than lead-acid but still may only offer 500 cycles.

#4) Reliable:
Lithionics lithium ion batteries only lose less than 1% per month from self-discharge during storage. A lead acid battery loses up to 15% per month. Thus, our lithium ion battery can sit for over 1 year with over 75% of its energy stored and ready to power your loads or start your engine.

Since many vehicles have what is called a "Parasitic Drain", with our optional NeverDie BMS System if your vehicle needs to be stored for several months at a time before uses, you can quickly and easily turn off the lithium battery with its single pushbutton.

Many things can cause early death to a lead acid battery which can leave you stranded at inconvenient times. High temperatures and storage (as little as 90 days) are among the most common reasons for lead acid battery premature death.

#5) Never Dies - With NeverDie BMS Technology
With our Patented "NeverDie Technology", if an accessory such as an internal light or the headlights were left on, your battery will enter "Sleep Mode" and retain enough of the battery's energy for emergency power or engine starts (10%). Simply push the button on the battery and the battery "wakes up" and is ready to start the engine.

Our proprietary Mosfet bridge circuitry prevents over-discharging the battery and as a result, no harm is done to the battery. The result is that you will never be left stranded or in need of a jump start.

Human error, such as leaving a light on, can drain a lead acid battery, leaving you stranded. This also harms the lead acid battery and shortens its life.

#6) No Maintenance:
Our lithium ion batteries save you time. Completely sealed with no water levels to check and fill. In fact, our batteries contain no water that needs to be maintained whatsoever, so there are no water levels to "babysit".

Our batteries use super high quality brass terminals with stainless steel hardware that reduce corrosion at terminal posts which means no work and no mess.

The water levels in lead acid batteries constantly need to be checked and filled. Also, the lead terminals are continuously corroding and need to be cleaned. When these maintenance procedures are not followed, the battery may fail at any time.
#7) Superior Efficiency and Environmentally Friendly Battery:
Have the satisfaction of knowing that with a Lithionics Battery, you have contributed to a healthier environment. Our batteries are an Environmentally Friendly, Green Battery that are RoHS compliant.
In the USA alone, nearly 99 million lead acid car batteries are produced each year. A typical lead acid battery contains about 18 lbs. of lead. Lead is a known poison that is harmful to the environment.

Solar Power:
Our lithium ion batteries are the perfect choice for all Solar Power battery applications. Our lithium ion batteries are 97% efficient round-trip Versus lead acid batteries that are only 55% to 85%efficient. This means you harvest much more Solar Power with our Lithionics Lithium ion Batteries.

Example: If we have two exact same solar panel/ MPPT solar charge controller systems – one with a Lithionics battery and one with an AGM or lead-acid battery with the same usable Amp hour capacity, for each hour of sunshine the Lithionics battery will capture 97% of the sun’s energy whereas the other battery may only receive a little more than half of the available solar power. This means that with the Lithionics lithium-ion batteries you will recharge your battery system much faster than with lead-acid or AGM batteries.

8. Safety Leader:
Safety has always been priority number 1 at Lithionics and this why they only invest in the highest quality A Grade lithium battery cells and have the best designed, easiest to use and most reliable Battery Management System (BMS) that we call NeverDie. For example, if a short circuit appears in your system, the BMS will automatically shut off the battery power at the terminals in milliseconds. With conventional batteries they will continue powering the short circuit which could lead to burnt wires and a fire.

The Lithionics NeverDie BMS features a microprocessor on every cell of the battery (24 Volt batteries have 2, 51 Volt batteries have 4) that is constantly measuring current, temperature, Voltage and other factors and reporting it the “Master BMS”. We call the microprocessors the “MiniBMS”. So as soon as any anomaly appears the BMS instantly shuts off the power until the problem disappears or is corrected. The BMS also actively controls charging and discharging for safety and performance as well as a number of other important functions.

To learn all about the safety features of the Lithionics BMS, visit the NeverDie BMS page on our website at https://www.getlithium.com/22_Lithionics_Battery_Management_Systems.html.

Also, as the Lithionics batteries do not emit any dangerous gasses or fumes, not only are they far safer than conventional batteries but we can mount them inside living quarters – where it is easier to control temperatures.

Lead-acid and AGM batteries can generate dangerous and explosive hydrogen gasses – especially during charging. In fact, I met a Client at one of the Anuual BC Boat Shows that we exhibited at in BC Place. This fellow was a boat owner and he was telling me that his marine mechanic had actually suffered the loss of sight in one of his eyes when a lead-acid battery that he was working on suddenly exploded from the hydrogen gasses and a spark when he removed a terminal wire.

If you’d like us to do a no pressure evaluation of your system we’d be happy to do so. We will look at everything that connects to the battery system so that we are certain to offer you exactly what is needed. Title: Charging lithium-ion batteries via the alternator – what are my options?

As lithium-ion batteries are expensive we want to do everything we can to protect them – which means making sure that all charging equipment is properly programmed for the correct charging Voltages and regulated for current or Amps.

In this article I will discuss the best practices for charging the Lithionics lithium-ion batteries in RV’s, yachts and so on that will have a propulsion motor with some form of alternator on it. Please keep in mind that whenever the alternator is going to charge 2 or more different/ separate battery banks we must properly isolate the charging path for each battery bank so that they can all charge independently and optimally. Some of the devices I will discuss below will also isolate the battery banks, otherwise, we may want to use one of the industry leading, 99.9% efficient Perfect Switch dual battery isolator rectifier relays (found on our website at our Perfect Switch Battery Isolator Intro Page at: https://www.getlithium.com/29_Perfect_Switch_Battery_Isolators.html )

OPTION 1: Directly/ Indirectly charging the Lithionics lithium-ion batteries from either an OEM alternator (factory issued) or lithium specific built alternator – such as those we offer by Nations Alternator (predominantly for land vehicles), Balmar, DC Power (predominantly for marine applications and generators) and others. More info on lithium compatible alternators we offer is located on our Alternator webpage at: https://www.getlithium.com/High_output_alternator_inverter_charger.html

The first thing we need to identify is what is the actual Amp output of the alternator and make sure that it does not exceed the maximum allowable charging Amps for your Lithionics Battery(s). Assuming that the alternator’s output will not exceed the maximum charging Amps for the battery, then the following will apply:
A. OEM Alternators: These are factory equipped alternators and are not designed for use with lithium-ion batteries so we must be extremely careful not to burn them out. In almost all cases, these OEM alternators will have an internal Voltage regulator that cannot be adjusted for the Lithionics charge Voltages. If this is true, then we have 2 safe methods to still utilize this alternator while you drive but we will be required to install one of the following:

A1. Lithionics ACR (Automatic Charge Relay): Here, we can connect the alternator’s positive output wire to the ACR’s big main contactor (I suggest that you order the Lithionics ACR together with the contactor). The way the ACR works is it takes the alternator’s 12 Volt output and properly regulates the Voltage. At the same time, the ACR also has programmed into it “alternator cooling cycles” so that after 45 minutes of charging, the ACR contactor opens and stops current going to the Lithionics battery for 15 minutes to allow the alternator to cool off. With this system, you can potentially recharge the Lithionics with full or near full Amp output from your alternator – after engine start battery charging and any DC loads are accounted for.

A2. DC to DC Smart Charger: Here we can control both the Amps and Voltage going to the Lithionics battery with what is called a DC to DC Smart Battery Charger. Now its important to note that this is quite different from a DC to DC Converter (which can be used as a power supply but not for charging). The best model to use is the Victron Orion-TR Smart DC to DC Charger which is available in models with 12 Volt output ranging from about 9 Amps to 30 Amps. I most often install the 30 Amp version and in many cases, we can install several of them in parallel to increase the charging Amps from 30 Amps to 60 or 90 or higher Amps. The Victron model has an easy to use Bluetooth App that makes it easy to set up the charging Voltages and you can also monitor what the device is doing. They also come with a great 5 year warranty.

Lithionics also approves the use of the Chinese made Kisae brand DC to DC chargers available in 30 and 50 Amps (possibly higher Amp versions coming) but I have found these very difficult to program and then confirm that I have the programming correctly set. As such, I only install the Victron Orion models.

B. Specialty Alternator: You plan to use a purpose built lithium compatible alternator: Here you will have a Nations Alternator, Balmar or DC Power lithium capable alternator that must be connected to either a Balmar or Wakespeed External Voltage Regulator.

B1. If using the Balmar regulator (such as the Balmar MC614 model), we will need to connect the Lithionics battery’s BMS option “FCC” (Field Circuit Control) wire connected to the Balmar regulator. This will communicate and tell the alternator when to turn off/ wind down the alternator’s field output – either when the battery is full or an error is detected.

B2. If using the Wakespeed WS500 regulator, it will connect to the Lithionics BMS via a CANBus connection/ wire harness. This is the best way to go as it is more sophisticated control of the alternator than with the FCC option.

B3. Of course, if your specialty lithium capable alternator is serving two separate lithium battery banks (or two battery banks with different chemistry) of the same Voltage, you could also use the Victron Orion-TR Smart DC to DC Charger(s) on one of the battery banks.

Both of these External Voltage Regulators do an excellent job of protecting the alternator from a sudden power cut and can be custom programmed for the correct charging Voltages. Both also have the option of decreasing the alternator’s output by up to 25% - which may be needed if you say have a 200 Amp alternator but your Lithionics battery/ BMS have a max. charge rate approval for 150 Amps.

Please keep in mind that many RV manufacturers place limits on the number of Amps permitted to going to charging a secondary battery bank. For example, the Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans generally permit only up to 80 Amps to be drawn off the OEM alternator to recharge the Lithionics Battery system. If you want more than the manufacturer’s warranty approved limits, you can always opt for one of the Nations Alternator dedicated second alternator kits that are available for most popular Mercedes, Ford, GM and Dodge truck chassis. More info on lithium compatible dedicated second alternator kits that we offer is located on our Alternator webpage at: https://www.getlithium.com/High_output_alternator_inverter_charger.html

Title: How do I decide – a Victron or Xantrex inverter-charger?

The simple answer is that we will help you to identify which model and brand will serve you best in your specific application – be it RV, Marine, Industrial or Off-Grid project.

Both brands have strengths and weaknesses so in this brief post I will point out the factors that set them apart so that you can choose the best one for your specific needs. Both brands are very well built and engineered and both are trusted/ approved for use with the Lithionics lithium-ion battery systems (Lithionics also approves of the use of the Chinese brand Kisae but wherever possible I prefer to supply Clients with North American/ European products).

Power: Both Xantrex Freedom XC PRO 2,000 and 3,000 Watt inverter-chargers offer both more 120 Volt AC power as well as higher battery charging Amps than the comparable Victron versions. The Xantrex models offer a true 2,000 or 3,000 Watts of 120 Volt AC output and either a 100 or 150 Amp battery charger. Compare that with Victron Multiplus Compact or Multiplus that offers either 2,000 or 3,000 “VA” which is not Watts and in fact represents lower 120 Volt AC output of 1,600 or 2,400 Watts. This means that they cannot fully support a 30 Amp 120 Volt AC circuit breaker panel powering your gear that needs a full 3,000 Watts. In addition, the Victron models have less powerful battery chargers with 80 or 120 Amps of battery charging output which means it will take longer to recharge your batteries.

Installation: Here, in most cases Xantrex is preferred for a number of reasons. First of all, the Xantrex can be more easily programmed for different battery types including lithium-ion. You can simply use the onboard display or Xantrex remote display to do the programming. Victron on the other hand requires a special computer software program called “Victron Configure” plus a special Victron data cable called the MK3-USB adapter plus an RJ45 Ethernet cable and of course a computer. This process is a little tricky to do the programming and is usually best for a Victron trained professional to do the programming. For remote control of Victron inverter-chargers, you can opt for the affordable Victron Digital Multicontrol switch or a central hub and display like the Victron Cerbo GX and GX Touch Control Display.

The Xantrex inverter-chargers are also of a form factor/ size that is easier to install and they can be table mounted (flat) or vertical or even roof mounted (upside down). The Xantrex inverter-chargers are both smaller and a fair bit lighter than the Victron models (Victron Multiplus is approx. 40 pounds/ Xantrex Freedom PRO XC 3,000 is approx. 26 pounds). Note: Xantrex also offers a heavier duty Freedom SW 3012 3,000 Watt inverter-charger with the same specs/ battery charging of 150 Amps but it is in a larger case and weighs close to 60 pounds. The Victron models typically need to be mounted in the upright position only with all cabling coming out the bottom so they do require more vertical height than the Xantrex for installing – which often dictates that we need to use the Xantrex.

Functionality: Both brands have a variety of features that can be adjusted but the Victron does not have a graphic display so you will need an additional Victron display (such as the Cerbo GX/ GX Touch display or the Ekrano) to be able to see what is going on. The one nice feature of Victron is that you can easily turn off the battery charger with a rocker switch on the device's faceplate.

One key question to answer is this: Do you plan on having additional Victron devices in your system that are all networked together to a central hub like the Cerbo GX/ GX Touch display or the Ekrano? If this answer is Yes and you are not a heavy power user (not always maxing to 30 Amps of 120 Volt AC power) then the Victron may be the better choice for you as you will be able to see it through the central display. Without exception, on all of my installations and systems that I sell, I will also use the Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT solar charge controllers as well as the Victron Orion Smart DC to DC chargers if we are unable to utilize the full alternator power.

Bluetooth: Only Xantrex offers a simple Bluetooth solution for your Smartphone which is accomplished by adding the Bluetooth remote display panel for around $200. Victron can have a Bluetooth connection but you will need to network the Multiplus to the Cerbo GX/ GX Touch display or the Ekrano at an additional cost of $500 to $800 and still have limited control of the inverter.

Price/ Warranty: Here, Victron is better on both price and warranty where the warranty is 5 years versus 2 years for Xantrex. However, if your inverter is a stand-alone device that you need some display for, the price goes up by a good $500 to $800 to add in the Cerbo GX/ GX Touch display or the Ekrano.

Summary:
Of the last 20 or so RV and Marine projects that I have installed on, I would say that just 2 of them used the Victron Multiplus 3,000 VA were chosen (not by me but by other engineers involved earlier) whereas the other 18 have been the Xantrex Freedom XC PRO 3,000 Watt version. Many of these projects involved upgrading an existing RV’s Xantrex Freedom XC PRO 2,000 Watt version to the 3,000 Watt version so that all of the 30 Amp 120 Volt AC circuit breaker panel via Lithionics battery power (as well as by Shore/ Generator power) so that things like roof top air conditioners could also be run on battery power. I tend to prefer the Xantrex model due to increased flexibility of installation, higher 120 Volt AC throughput, higher Amp battery charger and ease of use for Clients.

Important Note: Please make sure that you both leave at least 2” of free air space on all sides of the inverter and that it has plenty of ventilation. Like almost all electrical devices, inverter-chargers output less battery charging current and less 120 Volts AC as their temperature rises. We want to keep them cool as above 25 Celsius they begin losing power due to heat inefficiencies.

More information on the Xantrex inverter-chargers is on our webpage at: http://www.getlithium.com/High_output_alternator_inverter_charger.html
More information on the Victron Energy inverter-chargers is on our webpage at: http://www.getlithium.com/30b_Victron_Energy_inverter_charger_electric_components.html

What is the “BMS” or Battery Management System?

Lithionics has branded the lithium-ion battery’s Battery Management System as “NeverDie”. We often refer to this system as the BMS in short. Lithionics NeverDie BMS really sets itself apart from all other competitors on a number of levels. In short, it is simply the most robust, most simple to use, safest and feature-rich BMS available.

Lithionics NeverDie BMS is basically available in two main products:
• Internal BMS – where it is built into the battery box.
• As an external BMS box – where the BMS is self contained in a separate electrical box that connects to one or more Lithionics Battery Modules. For this option, there is an additional option called “Dual Channel BMS” which separates both the battery system’s charging and discharging functions. The Dual Channel BMS is optimal as it gives an added layer of potential functionality (important for marine projects) whereby if for example there is a battery charging error, the BMS will shut off the charging circuit but leave the load circuit open so that you can continue powering loads like navigation instruments, lights etc. The same also applies if a load error is detected – the load circuit will be closed but the charging circuit remains open so that you can at least continue recharging the battery.

The external BMS box option is always the best way to go as we can offer features that simply cannot fit on the internal BMS circuit boards and the external BMS uses a big military grade contactor – which again cannot fit on the internal BMS.

The Lithionics NeverDie BMS is proprietary and only works with the Lithionics lithium-ion battery products for the primary reason that it is in fact a two-part BMS with both a master control box that is in constant communication with our mini-BMS circuit boards (slaves) that are found on every cell inside each battery. This system works continuously together to provide both safety and battery protection functions that include but are not limited to the following:
• Over current protection
• Low battery Voltage protection
• Temperature intervention (both too high as well as too low cell temperatures)
• Short circuit protection
• Major cell imbalances
• And many more.
One main difference in the BMS available at different Voltages is that the 12 Volt batteries have a single mini-BMS on each cell, but when we go to 24 Volts the number of mini-BMS on each cell doubles which again happens when we jump up to 51 Volt and 102 Volt batteries. When an anomaly of any sort that could cause a safety issue the Lithionics NeverDie BMS will shut off power at the battery to prevent any damage to your systems or the battery itself – within milliseconds. If the error was simply a momentary “blip” of some sort, the BMS will automatically re-latch and restore power at the battery without any personal intervention. However if it is a more serious problem or the battery has been depleted to its maximum safe discharge level of 90% discharged, then the operator will need to first determine what went wrong (you can check the status codes on our Battery Monitoring System), do what you can to remedy the error and then manually turn the battery system back On – either on the battery’s On/Off/Reset button switch on top of the battery or the On/Off/Reset button switch on external BMS box.

If the battery and BMS have turned Off because the battery is depleted, you can simply press the Reset button for 1 second to access some emergency power but at this point you should really begin recharging.

Both “Master” and “Slave” BMS or mini-BMS are constantly communicating and reporting from the cell level things like Voltage, Amperage, Temperature and so on.

The On/Off/Reset button switch is very simple to use: press it for one second to turn On or press and hold it for 4 seconds to turn it Off. Also, when the switch is in the Off position it will turn Off the internal battery heater system - if equipped.

In addition, the Lithionics NeverDie BMS also provides the basis for the Lithionics State of Charge or Battery Monitoring System which is available standard on every system with a Bluetooth Smartphone App for your smartphone or the same information can be displayed on an optionally purchased external Lithionics State of Charge gauge that we call the “Ion Gauge”. Both systems report 17 critical battery parameters which include:
• Battery Voltage
• Battery Temperature
• Net Amps (the difference between any Amps being drawn or any Amps being charged). The system uses a super accurate Coulomb Amp counter that counts the number of Amps going in and out of the battery and shows if it is positive or negative as well as the Amp figure.
• A graphical “Battery Fuel Gauge”
• Status Codes – which can be very helpful in determining the battery’s health as well as troubleshooting if something goes wrong.
• Hours remaining at current Amp usage.
• Cumulative Amp hours used as well as history.
• And more…

In addition, the Lithionics NeverDie offers valuable data export functionality or Telemetry via CANBus, Bluetooth or Serial Port, Serial UART BMS Data Telemetry (Alternate: Serial RS232) and Ethernet TCP/IP. We can also connect with your generator’s Automatic Generator Restart function and we can control alternators safely with either our alternator Field Circuit Control (FCC) or via CANBus to Wakespeed external Voltage Regulators.

The Lithionics NeverDie BMS system is by far the best engineered, feature-rich, safe and easiest to use available on the market. More information on the Lithionics NeverDie BMS as well as options and pricing is found on our website at: https://www.getlithium.com/22_Lithionics_Battery_Management_Systems.html
