Infrastructure does not start on the jobsite.

Before a precast product is installed, it has already gone through design, production, curing, inspection, quality control, logistics, and delivery. That work often occurs in manufacturing facilities located near the communities where the final product will be used.

Local manufacturing matters because it supports local jobs, shortens supply chains, improves product availability, and keeps infrastructure dollars circulating closer to home.

During peak construction season, having dependable local production capacity is not just convenient; it can make a real difference in project timelines, quality, and long-term performance.

Behind every finished road, subdivision, stormwater system, or culvert crossing is a network of people and companies helping move the project forward.

Precast concrete is not only used in roads, bridges, stormwater systems, and municipal infrastructure - it can also play an important role in community and recreational spaces.

At The Willows in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the course is being reconfigured as part of a larger residential development. To help golfers, pedestrians, golf carts, and maintenance equipment move safely through the area, buried precast concrete crossings were selected for two locations along Willows Road.

The project brought together ASL Paving Ltd, for the box culvert installations and Souris Valley Industries Ltd as the precast producer, with precast box structures, modular headwalls, wingwalls, careful site planning, and efficient installation, helping support a safe and functional solution for the course and the surrounding community.

Local infrastructure starts with local materials.

Concrete pipe and precast products rely on materials such as aggregates, cementitious materials, reinforcing steel, and other inputs that are often sourced, supplied, and transported through regional networks.

When infrastructure products are manufactured close to the communities they serve, the benefits can extend beyond the final installation. Local sourcing can support regional suppliers, reduce unnecessary transportation, strengthen supply chains, and help keep more economic value in the community.

Infrastructure spending has a ripple effect.

The roads, stormwater systems, culverts, and underground infrastructure we build are physical assets, but the process of building them also supports people, businesses and communities along the way.

CCPPA was proud to recognize two new Honorary Members at our latest conference in Montreal: Gerry Mulhern and Mark Omelaniec.

Both individuals have made significant contributions to the concrete pipe and precast industry in Canada through decades of leadership, technical knowledge, industry service, and commitment to advancing the sector.

Gerry played a key role in the creation of CCPPA and served as President until his retirement in 2023.

Mark spent more than 23 years with Langley Concrete Group, helping grow a third-generation family business into a leading concrete pipe and precast supplier in British Columbia, while also serving in leadership roles with both CCPPA and ACPA.

Thank you for your efforts in advancing our industry.

Canada Day is a good reminder that the infrastructure we rely on every day is often built much closer than people realize.

From concrete pipe and precast products to the people who manufacture, transport, design, inspect, and install them, Canadian infrastructure is supported by a wide network of local expertise.

When we choose locally manufactured infrastructure products, we are not only investing in roads, stormwater systems, bridges, culverts, and communities - we are also supporting Canadian workers, Canadian businesses, and Canadian supply chains.

Box culverts are a great example of how one precast product can support many different types of infrastructure.

They are commonly used for stormwater and drainage applications, but they can also support road crossings, rail crossings, pedestrian access, wildlife passages, utility corridors, and other custom infrastructure needs.

For municipalities, engineers, contractors, and project owners, that combination of durability, efficiency, and adaptability can make box culverts an important part of long-term infrastructure planning.
