Your Pre-Tow Checklist for 2026 — Save This Before Your Next Haul!
Ball Size: Confirm your trailer ball matches your coupler size exactly. The most common sizes are 1-7/8 inch, 2 inch, and 2-5/16 inch — check your coupler and match it before you buy.
Weight Rating: Weigh your fully loaded trailer and confirm your trailer ball, hitch, and tow vehicle are all rated above that number. Every component in the chain matters.
Shank Size: Check the diameter and length of your shank before purchasing your trailer ball. A proper fit keeps everything locked in and secure under load.
Hardware Torque: Torque your trailer ball nut to the manufacturer's specification before every trip. This is one of the simplest steps and one of the most important.
Material and Finish: Solid steel with a durable protective finish is your best bet for regular or heavy-duty towing. It outlasts chrome and holds up in tough weather conditions.
Lights: Test all trailer lights before you pull out — brake lights, turn signals, and running lights all need to be working.
Safety Chains: Cross your safety chains under the coupler and make sure they are properly secured with no excess drag on the ground.
Coupler Latch: Double check that your coupler is fully seated on the ball and the latch is locked. Give it a tug before you go.
Tire Pressure: Check tire pressure on both your tow vehicle and your trailer. Proper inflation keeps your setup stable and your fuel efficiency where it should be.
Get these nine things right before every haul and you will be set for a safe, smooth towing season all year long. (pssst. Dynaline has everything you need!)
