At MacuMira, we believe clinicians should have access to timely, transparent, and meaningful evidence as it becomes available. Through our new Clinical Research Updates series, we aim to keep the eye care community informed about our ongoing investments in research and evidence generation.

In Update 1, we are pleased to announce the initiation of a multicentre retrospective chart review being conducted by the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE) in Waterloo, Ontario.

The study will evaluate approximately 250 patient records from 25 clinics across Canada, including retina, comprehensive ophthalmology, and optometry practices. The primary outcome is best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), with additional analyses of contrast sensitivity and optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings where available.

As interest in further clinical evidence for MacuMira continues to grow, we remain committed to generating rigorous, clinically meaningful data that supports informed treatment decisions for patients with dry age-related macular degeneration.

Preliminary findings are anticipated as early as August 2026, and we look forward to sharing additional Clinical Research Updates as this and other evidence-generation initiatives progress.

During Macular Awareness month, we are dedicated to raising awareness of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other macular diseases, highlighting the importance of maintaining macular health for clear, central vision.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that affects the macula - the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. As the macula becomes damaged, it can lead to blurred or distorted vision and make everyday tasks such as reading, driving and recognising faces more difficult.

This month focuses on education, early detection and empowering people to take proactive steps to protect their sight. Through screenings, educational resources and shared expertise, we can help improve understanding and outcomes for patients.

Your patient tells you their vision is getting worse. Their chart says 20/40 stable. They’re probably both right.

In early and intermediate dry AMD, drusen and RPE dysfunction can impair how patients see in low light, read in a restaurant, and recognise faces, before any significant change shows up on a standard acuity test.

BCVA measures foveal cone resolution under ideal conditions. Most of what your AMD patient is actually experiencing happens outside those conditions.

Contrast sensitivity helps close that gap. It captures object-background discrimination across spatial frequencies, the visual capacity that governs real-world tasks, and research shows it detects deficits earlier and tracks functional decline more closely than BCVA changes alone.

If your AMD monitoring ends at the eye chart, there’s meaningful clinical data you’re not seeing.
