September is Vascular Disease Awareness Month.

Leg swelling, heaviness, aching or visible veins may make people consider compression stockings—but compression is not one-size-fits-all.

The right approach starts with understanding the cause, selecting an appropriate compression level and obtaining accurate measurements. Compression may support certain venous conditions, but it may not be suitable for everyone—particularly when arterial circulation is a concern.

If symptoms are new, unexplained or affect only one leg, seek medical guidance before choosing compression.

Ankle injury — brace or walking boot? 🦶

Not every ankle injury needs the same level of support.

A lighter ankle brace may be appropriate for some sprains or situations where controlled movement is desired.

A walking boot may be recommended when greater protection or immobilization is needed—for example, with certain moderate-to-severe sprains, stable fractures, stress injuries, Achilles injuries or after some procedures.

But more support isn't automatically better. Unnecessary immobilization can contribute to stiffness, weakness and changes in the way you walk.

The injury should determine the support — not the other way around.

If you have significant swelling, deformity, numbness, unusual foot colour or temperature, an open wound, severe pain, or difficulty bearing weight after an injury, seek medical assessment rather than simply putting yourself into a boot.

Once a brace or walking boot has been recommended, Calmedi can help with product selection, sizing, fitting and adjustment.
