With an open yoke design, if the seal leaks, the leakage will drain onto the floor, which is obvious and easy to clean up. It's also recommended to hose down this area during clean-in-place procedures to keep it clean.

In the case of a closed yoke pump, if the seal leaks, the space between the pump and the motor fills with the product, which can then spoil and contaminate your product. This is why closed yoke pumps aren’t used in the food and beverage industry.

A recirculation loop can look simple, but a few setup choices can cause constant headaches.

If the suction or discharge hose creates a low point, you can end up trapping air in the line. Combine that with less than ideal setup choices, as listed above, and the pump can continuously lose prime and air lock.

How do these mistakes affect the centrifugal pump's performance?

1. Casing orientation.
A centrifugal pump performs differently depending on how the head is positioned. The ideal position is the outlet facing 45° to the left, allowing trapped air to escape easily. However, this can make piping more difficult.

2. 90° elbow at the inlet.
There are no tees or elbows immediately before the inlet of your pump, as they cause turbulence and have the potential to restrict the flow. This is one of the leading causes of suction cavitation.

3. Skipping a bump test.
After you install or service a motor, it’s important to check the motor’s rotation. A “bump test” (briefly energizing a motor) will give you enough time to verify that the shaft is turning in the right direction. Reverse operation will also lead to vibration, excessive noise, and cavitation.

4. Dry running.
Not priming a centrifugal pump (non-priming ones) will result in dry running, which will quickly damage the pump's internal components.

5. No support.
Don't let the pump hang from the piping. The piping system shouldn't carry the pump's weight. This will put strain on your system, and it has a greater chance of misalignment and leakage.

Common causes of centrifugal pump leaks include:

1. Mechanical seal failure.
Failure commonly occurs due to wear, misalignment, and residue buildup that is caused by dry running, cavitation, improper CIP, incorrect reassembly, or incompatible fluids.

2. Improper water flush.
On certain pumps, a stuffing box sits around the pump shaft and holds an E-style mechanical seal. It's designed to lubricate and cool the seal by using flush liquid. Without proper flushing, the stuffing box will fill with the pumped liquid, causing leaks and contamination.

3. Casing or Tri-Clamp misalignment.
You need to avoid uneven gasket compression as this will not seat and/or seal properly. Another cause is excessive vibration caused by pressure spikes (water hammer) and/or cavitation.

4. Wrong rotation during startup.
When the shaft spins opposite its intended direction, internal hydraulic performance is compromised, and internal components may become stressed beyond their design limits.

5. Deadheading.
Deadheading is when a pump continues operating without flow. The energy from the impeller rotating will begin to heat the recirculating fluid, eventually turning it into v***r. This creates unstable conditions that will damage internal components.
