It’s an icy situation at the nursery. I have no kelp growing in these, and if I did, it would be thriving. These 4 new tanks awaiting the plumber, so the water is not salted. Afraid of possible damage to the tanks, I am adding pickling and kosher salt tonight. It’s pretty but definitely not funny.

Did you know???
North America now has 249 permitted kelp farms covering 6,280 acres—enough to produce tens of millions of pounds of kelp.

In 2025, more than 50 nurseries delivered 1.2 million feet of seedstring.

Things are growing!

Draining and cleaning the “teaching”tank. This is my oldest 90 gallon tank. It’s the tank I set up for a mock batch when hosting high school or Dalhousie students out of growing season. Tanks get conditioned over time and more reliable and resistant to bad stuff like diatoms. It’s my favorite tank and soon I will have to give it a name as the tank family is growing. In this tank I have purposely grown green algae at rocket speed, diatoms in year one, onions, hot peppers and brussell sprouts, and have purposesly starved some baby kelp to see the colour changes and tried to revive them unsuccessfully. I also use it to tumble around long blades of kelp if I don’t have time to prepare the tissue. It’s a beautiful sight. I have also tried 8 types of twine with one batch to see what twine worked best. It’s all in the name of science.
Always something to learn.

Today is World Ocean Day! It’s an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of kelp and to share a few tidbits about our kelp nursery.
While the nursery is land based, we collect beautiful kelp blades in the ocean to make healthy kelp seedlings. Did you know that the kelp used to make seeds must come from within a 50km radius of the kelp lease area? One reason is to avoid any cross contamination between kelp. The other reason is to prevent a new strain of sugar kelp from developing. Our southwest Nova Scotia region has the most robust kelp, and the cleanest, we have seen.

Kelp absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, provides habitats in the ocean for fish, invertebrates and mammals, and can contribute to the global food system.

Leblanc seeded Lines has basically no kelp waste when preparing for growth. Our friends at Café Caye Mangé in Yarmouth take all our clean waste to make thickening agent for their plant based food.

Happy World Ocean Day!
