After the Diamond: Botswana 🇧🇼, the architecture of enterprise and the luxury of becoming a nation that , , , and .

What comes after the resource? Not after it disappears, necessarily. More interestingly! What comes after a country has learned how to govern it well? At 60, Botswana’s 🇧🇼 most consequential economic conversation may no longer concern the diamond beneath the ground.

It may concern the architecture of the capability above it. The , the , the . The , , , , , , and capable of transforming natural wealth into productive imagination. The next chapter of Botswana’s 🇧🇼 diamond story may therefore be written less in carats than in capability.

A 2026 proposition from the British 🇬🇧 Design Council offers an instructive lens. Its emerging model of begins with a deceptively simple observation. Regions often already possess much of what innovation requires. Businesses are developing products, universities are generating research and knowledge, and designers are solving complex problems.

What is frequently missing is not another institution. It is . The proposed hubs seek to transform dispersed capability into a functioning economic system. Designers connected to companies, research connected to commercialization, skills connected to emerging industries, public service challenges connected to creative expertise, and Indigenous knowledge connected to investment.

Seen through a Botswana 🇧🇼 lens, the proposition becomes larger than design. It becomes a question of economic architecture. How might a nation renowned for managing natural wealth now become equally distinguished for converting knowledge into enterprise? Creativity into intellectual property, research into industry, and cultural intelligence into globally competitive products and services?

Perhaps that is the deeper meaning of what comes after the diamond. Not an economy without diamonds. An economy capable of doing more with everything the diamond made possible…

Our Founding Director and Chief Design Officer, Gabriel Mothibedi had the pleasure of visiting Botswana’s distinguished artist Wilsonngoni art’s “I” solo exhibition at the Botswana National Museum alongside his 2nd and 5th year Bachelor of Industrial Design students from the Faculty of Design and Built Environment, at the University of Botswana_Official.

The visit provided a unique opportunity for Mr Wilson Ngoni to personally curate and narrate the works, offering the students direct insight into both the artistic intent and the broader cultural context of the exhibition. More importantly, it allowed us to examine the enduring dialogue between art and design across

major movements, from the Victorian era and the Arts and Crafts movement to African Art, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Bauhaus, Modernism, Mid-Century Modern, and Postmodernism, as well as Impressionism, Futurism, Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Realism, and Constructivism, which the students have studied and critically examined in their courses on Concepts of Design and the History of Art and Design.

The engagement further enabled an exploration of how these philosophies, principles, and visual languages are embodied within semiotics and product semantics, and how they continue to inform contemporary practices in visual communication, information design, consumer product design and engineering.

Particular emphasis was placed on the roles of form, purpose, meaning, structure, symbolism, and narrative within the design practice, and on how these elements may contribute to preserving Botswana’s inherent cultural traits and indigenous knowledge systems in the conceptualisation and development of locally grounded products.
