Having allowed customers to reduce their downtime when replacing bearings in a captured location, the original split bearing concept was revolutionary from a maintenance speed perspective, but there were occasional challenges that the original design could not overcome. Customers had a limited ability to raise the shaft for bearing installation and removal, making this difficult. This led to the launch of Cooper’s Quick Change® Pedestal, also known as the Q series. Their angled split design allows for minimal shaft movement during both bearing installation and removal. Like the original Cooper design, the Q series offers the same base to shaft center heights, equivalent bolt hole spacing and multiple seal options. Additionally, the angled pedestal provides extra strength in belt tensioning applications due to the split being located outside of the direct belt tension zone – especially useful in applications such as fans and blowers.

“The value of an idea lies in the using of it” – Thomas Edison. The history of bearings can be traced all the way back to 2600 BC when Ancient Egyptians used a form of roller bearing to assist in moving large stones during Pyramid construction.
Fast forward a few thousand years. Past Leonardo da Vinci’s concept design of a helicopter using ball bearings in 1500 AD. Jules Suriray receiving a patent for radial ball bearings in 1869, fitted on the winning bike of the world’s first bicycle race in Paris. To 1907, when our founder Sven Wingqvist invented the self-aligning ball bearing and set a new standard for design. Here at SKF, bearings have and continue to unlock many wonders of the world, helping it run smoother, safer and more reliably. It’s an idea that has proven its immense value time and time again – and will continue to do so far into the future.
