The pivotal POSEIDON study, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, assessed the safety and efficacy of the alfapump System in patients with recurrent or refractory ascites due to liver cirrhosis.

The study found that implantation significantly reduced the need for therapeutic paracentesis, with the majority of patients achieving a meaningful reduction in drainage procedures. Patients also reported significant improvements in quality of life, including an average of 10 additional good health days per month.

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, a timely reminder that viral hepatitis, if left untreated, can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer. Millions of people are living with chronic hepatitis B or C without knowing it, and for those who do develop advanced liver disease, the consequences can be life-altering.

At Sequana Medical, we work every day for patients navigating the serious complications of advanced liver disease, including those living with recurrent or refractory ascites due to liver cirrhosis.

This month, we stand with the hepatitis awareness community in encouraging adults to get tested and vaccinated.

The alfapump System is the first and only FDA-approved active implantable medical device for the treatment of recurrent or refractory ascites due to liver cirrhosis.

Here’s how it works:

The pump is implanted under the skin in an approximately 80-minute procedure performed by an interventional radiologist. Once in place, it automatically and continuously moves fluid from the abdomen to the bladder, where it is naturally eliminated. No needles. No external tubes. No repeated hospital visits for drainage.

The only daily requirement for patients is a simple 20-minute wireless recharge, similar to charging a phone. During that time, pump performance data is collected and this enables the Sequana team to send regular reports to the treating physician, providing important insights on the patient’s progress with the alfapump.

For patients who have lived around the schedule of paracentesis, that is a meaningful shift.

Today is World Liver Day 🌍

This year’s theme, “Solid Habits, Strong Liver,” is a powerful reminder of how much lifestyle choices impact liver health and why early intervention matters. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects one-third of the global population, but small, steady changes to diet, exercise and drinking habits and regular check-ups can prevent serious complications, like liver scarring, cirrhosis or even liver cancer.

For the 1.5 billion people already living with chronic liver disease worldwide, the stakes are high. At Sequana Medical, we’re focused on those navigating the serious consequences of advanced liver disease, including patients with recurrent or refractory ascites due to liver cirrhosis.

On this World Liver Day, we stand with the global liver disease community in the effort to raise awareness of liver health and improve outcomes and quality of life for patients everywhere.
