🚊Take two minutes to hear what Corentin Guyot, Managing Director at B-SENS, has to say. You might be surprised by what an optical fiber can actually do.

B-SENS has installed its demonstrator at A6K to show how optical fibers can do much more than carry light. Using Fiber Bragg Gratings, they can measure temperature, strain and deformation, even in environments where conventional sensors reach their limits.

The demonstrator highlights three applications, from detecting train axles to mapping temperature inside industrial furnaces and monitoring the structural health of composite materials.

Now up and running at A6K, it gives companies the opportunity to explore the technology firsthand and see how it could address their own measurement challenges.

From conversations about major European scientific projects to meetings around international business and a campus full of students, the past few days have brought together a wide range of people and ambitions. Last week was a busy week.

🔭 The Einstein Telescope Roadshow stopped by for an afterwork exploring the industrial opportunities behind Europe’s future gravitational-wave observatory, and the technologies that will help make it a reality.

🌍 The Explort Speed Dating, supported by Wallonia Export & Investment Agency - AWEX, brought companies and preselected candidates together for face-to-face meetings to identify talent and explore opportunities to support companies’ international development.

🎒 Over at E6K, first-year students from Haute Ecole Provinciale de Hainaut-Condorcet spent the week meeting professionals, taking on team challenges and discovering the socio-educational sector beyond the classroom.

Three very different initiatives, all part of what makes the hub such a lively place to work, learn and connect.

AKT for Wallonia

🏭 In 1976, a major industrial player in the region brought its Hot Strip Mill into operation. Fifty years later, the mill is still at the heart of its industrial activity, even though today’s installation looks very different from the one that produced its first coil.

This milestone took us to look back at how continuous investment, new technologies and evolving expertise have transformed the mill over the decades, including the shift to high-performance stainless steel and the development of new capabilities and processes.

The transformation continues, with new investments aimed at reducing energy consumption and emissions, including a direct annealing facility planned to start in 2027–2028.

This week, we were celebrating with Aperam Châtelet during an event that brought together Frédérico Ayres Lima, CEO of Aperam Stainless Europe, Serge Dallenogare, Director of the Châtelet site, and Cécile Neven, Walloon Minister for Energy, Air-Climate Plan, Housing and Airports, to discuss the future of European steel and the role of industry in the region.

Innovation is already at work on the factory floor. ARK Capture Solutions, a start-up supported by our acceleration program, is testing its CO₂ capture technology at Aperam Châtelet. Serge Dallenogare highlighted the project during the event, putting the spotlight on the value of bringing start-ups and industrial players around the same table.

🔭 The Einstein Telescope is taking shape, bringing together technologies, expertise and industrial capabilities from many different fields, and creating concrete opportunities for Walloon companies.

ET Wallonia, in partnership with AKT for Wallonia and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry, is bringing its roadshow to A6K.

🚢 Cédric Laruelle, Project Manager at Seafar gives you a closer look at the problem behind the project, the work carried out over the past four years and what comes next.

With a shortage of qualified crew in inland navigation, remote and automated navigation could offer a new way forward for the sector.

The NavAuWall consortium recently came together at A6K to mark the end of the project’s research phase. Coordinated by Seafar, the project brought together Multitel, DN&T, Versus and the Université de Liège, with the support of SPW and Logistics in Wallonia.

The project also highlights the importance of ecosystems such as A6K in bringing the right expertise together to make projects like this possible.

The Back-to-School Roadshow is returning to A6K for the third year in a row, bringing together young talents and the people building Belgium’s start-up ecosystem.

Belgium Startup Ecosystem | Nicolas Debray

🛰️ With a €2.4 billion contract to build 264 satellites for Europe's secure connectivity constellation, Aerospacelab is writing a new chapter in Belgium's space success story.

Aerospacelab has been selected as prime contractor for the low Earth orbit segment of IRIS², the EU's secure connectivity constellation.

The amount made the headlines, but the more telling number might be 264, the number of satellites Aerospacelab will deliver by 2030, out of 348 in total.

This is no longer about building satellites one project at a time but about moving to series production from next year, with its associated challenges of faster cycles, consistent quality, a qualified supply chain and enough skilled people to run it all.

Aerospacelab has been part of the A6K community since 2021, and the ramp-up ahead is exactly what an ecosystem of industrial groups, technology companies, research centres and training operators exists for.

It is also what E6K, our training campus, is built for, helping prepare the technicians and engineers series production will demand.

Congratulations to Benoît Deper and the entire Aerospacelab team, and to Sambrinvest, our long-standing partner, which backed this ambition from the early days and never stopped 👏

🎙️ Belgium’s start-up ecosystem is full of ambitious founders, growing companies and people building the next generation of businesses, but you might not realize it.

With communities spread across different cities and regions, and many success stories staying within local networks, it is not easy to see the full picture.

Claudia Colvin experienced this firsthand when she moved to Belgium in 2022 and started exploring the local start-up scene. What initially seemed small and fragmented turned out to be a much richer ecosystem than she had expected.

That realization led her to create Allez Startups, a podcast dedicated to bringing Belgium’s start-up stories into the spotlight.

Through conversations with founders, investors and ecosystem experts, Claudia explores what really happens behind the scenes of building and scaling a company, sharing personal experiences, practical advice and lessons learned along the way.

🔭 Some of the technologies that shape our everyday lives were born from ambitious scientific projects. The next generation of scientific infrastructure is ready to push innovation forward once again and create new opportunities for industry.

The Einstein Telescope, Europe’s future gravitational-wave observatory, is already bringing together a wide range of advanced technologies and opening new avenues for companies.

Join an afterwork organized by ET Wallonia, in partnership with AKT for Wallonia and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry, to discover what the project could mean for Walloon industry.

From precision mechanics, vacuum and cryogenics to optics, photonics, sensors, instrumentation, digital technologies and advanced algorithms, it will require expertise from many different industrial fields.
