At RailTech Europe in Utrecht today, Dries Basemans delivered a workshop "Mobile connectivity in trains" that sparked a lot of interest and many questions. One recurring concern was about 5G signals and whether allowing them through train windows is “unhealthy.”
This is a common misconception, and the reality is actually the opposite of what people expect.
When train windows are untreated, mobile devices struggle to connect. Your phone automatically increases its transmission power to compensate for the poor signal meaning radiation inside the train becomes up to 100× higher.
After our decoating treatment, the glass allows signals to pass through much more easily. As a result:
- Signal strength drops by around 20 dB (100×)
- Phones no longer need to boost their power
- Overall radiation inside the train is significantly lower
So instead of increasing exposure, improved signal transparency actually reduces it. Better connectivity = lower transmission power = a healthier environment for passengers.
A great example of how smart engineering can solve both technical and societal concerns at the same time.
