Components Of An Elevator Over speed Safety System And Their Mechanical Linkage.

Overspeed Governor: This critical safety device continuously monitors the elevator car's speed. If the car exceeds a predetermined safe limit (tripping speed), it mechanically engages and cuts off the elevator's power supply.

Tension Weight: Located at the bottom of the hoistway, this device maintains constant tension on the governor rope, ensuring reliable activation of the overspeed governor. A safety switch within the tension weight trips the elevator's control circuit if the rope becomes slack or breaks.

Car Bottom Sling: This is part of the robust steel framework (car frame) that holds the elevator cabin and transfers its weight to the wire ropes. The safety gear assembly is typically mounted to this bottom section.

Safety Gear Block: Mechanically linked to the overspeed governor via the governor rope, these are clamping devices that grip the guide rails in the elevator shaft when activated. This action physically forces the elevator car to stop in a controlled manner if an overspeed event occurs.

How the System Works

The overspeed governor rope forms a continuous loop around the governor sheave (at the top) and the tension weight sheave (at the bottom). As the elevator car moves, the rope turns the governor sheave. If the car's speed becomes excessive, the overspeed governor's internal mechanism (e.g., flyweights) is triggered, gripping the rope. This locked rope then pulls a linkage attached to the safety gear blocks, engaging them with the guide rails to bring the car to a safe stop.
