Standpipe hose connections should be located outside the required stair egress clearance to avoid obstructing occupant movement. The clearance arc is based on the stair width, projected across the landing. While minor encroachments might be arguable, best practice is to keep all components fully outside the egress path to avoid compliance issues and redesign.

๐Ÿ. ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ญ๐ฌ
In new construction, structural coordination is typically straightforward. However, in retrofits or irregular stair layouts, beams may conflict with desired standpipe locations. Avoid placing connections where major structural elements (like concrete beams) would require core drilling, as this can compromise structural integrity and require engineer approval.

A minimum of 3 inches of clearance must be provided around the hose valve handle to allow operation by firefighters wearing protective gloves. This ensures accessibility and usability under emergency conditions.

Drain risers are required for testing standpipe systems, especially when pressure-reducing valves are used. The riser must be sized to handle test flow:
โ–ช 3-inch riser for 2ยฝ-inch PRVs
โ–ช 2-inch riser for 1ยฝ-inch PRVs
โ–ช Or sized to accommodate full flow of the largest device
Connections should allow hose attachment for testing.

โ–ช Do you know how sprinkler piping components are arranged as per NFPA 13? Hereโ€™s a simplified view of Branch Lines, Armoยญvers, Drops, Sprigs, Return Bends, Ni***es, and Sprinklers (Upright & Pendent). Understanding these basics is essential for every fire safety professional & MEP Engineers.

โ–ช A fire sprinkler occupancy hazard classification is a convenient way to categorize a fuel load and fire severity for an area. Much of the remaining portion of fire sprinkler system design depends specifically upon this classification. This module is specific to NFPA 13.

๐Ÿ“Œ A sprinkler occupancy hazard classification is different than a buildingโ€™s occupancy, such as a Group E Educational occupancy. A sprinkler occupancy hazard classification is also different than NFPA 101โ€™s โ€œhazard of contentsโ€.

๐Ÿ“Œ NFPA 13 defines three different occupancy hazard classifications with subgroups for non-storage areas:
โœ… Light Hazard
โœ… Ordinary Hazard (Group 1)
โœ… Ordinary Hazard (Group 2)
โœ… Extra Hazard (Group 1)
โœ… Extra Hazard (Group 2)

๐Ÿ“Œ The definition within the body of the standards are intentionally vague. The Annex portion of NFPA 13 gives typical examples of each occupancy only as guidance to the responsible design professional to assign an occupancy hazard classification.

๐Ÿ“Œ The determination of an occupancy hazard classification is perhaps the single most-important decision in the design of a fire sprinkler system.

๐Ÿงฏ Fire Safety Essentials: How to Use a Portable Fire Extinguisher

When an emergency strikes, every second counts. Knowing how to correctly operate a portable fire extinguisher can prevent a minor incident from becoming a major disaster.

At Inferno Engineering, we believe safety starts with awareness. Here is a quick, step-by-step guide to using a portable fire extinguisher safely and effectively:

1๏ธโƒฃ Take the fire extinguisher from its designated wall cabinet or location.
2๏ธโƒฃ Approach the fire while maintaining a safe distance of 2 to 3 meters.
3๏ธโƒฃ Pull the pin to break the tamper seal.
4๏ธโƒฃ Aim low, pointing the nozzle or hose directly at the base of the fire, not the flames.
5๏ธโƒฃ Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
6๏ธโƒฃ Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it is completely extinguished.

Equip your workplace and home with the right tools and knowledge.
