Before modern semiconductors, DC elevator drives often relied on glowing blue-glass valves like this — a mercury-arc rectifier that converted alternating current (AC) into the direct current (DC) needed to power elevator traction motors. Invented in 1902 by American engineer Peter Cooper Hewitt, mercury-arc rectifiers became a cornerstone of DC elevator control systems from the 1920s through the early 1960s, until silicon diodes made them obsolete.
