Designing for wind is standard. Designing for a tornado is a completely different ballgame.

As structural engineers working on USA housing, we often rely on the IRC 2021 and ASCE 7 to keep occupants safe. But when it comes to tornadoes, the "standard" load path often isn't enough.

The physics of a tornado creates unique structural stressors that can turn a house into a deck of cards in seconds. Here is what we need to account for:

🛠️ The 3 Silent Killers of Residential Structures:

* Internal Pressurization (The Balloon Effect): When a window or door is breached by debris, the wind rushes in, creating massive internal pressure. This "pushes" the walls and roof from the inside while the exterior wind "pulls" from the outside. The result? Rapid structural failure.

* Extreme Uplift at Zones 2 & 3: Tornadoes generate localized pressures far exceeding standard wind maps. The eaves and corners of a roof (Zones 2 and 3) experience the highest uplift. Without heavy-duty hurricane ties and proper blocking, the roof becomes a wing.

🏠 Single-family dwelling

Instead of one specific building, let's look at the key seismic features the IRC requires in a typical modern home, especially in earthquake-prone areas:

1. The Continuous Load Path: Think of this as the home's skeleton and muscles working together. It’s an unbroken chain of steel and wood that ties the entire house from the roof down to the foundation. This ensures seismic forces are safely transferred into the ground.

2. Braced Wall Lines (Shear Walls): These aren't just any walls. They are strategically placed and reinforced panels that act as the building's primary defense against side-to-side (lateral) forces. In a wood house, this is typically a wall sheathed with plywood or Oriented Strand Board (OSB).

3. The Nailing Schedule 🔨: The strength of a braced wall comes down to the details. The IRC specifies the exact size and spacing of nails used to attach the sheathing to the wood studs. More nails in a tighter pattern create a much stronger wall capable of handling intense forces.

4. Metal Connectors and Anchors: You can't see them, but they're critical!
