Why suction piping diameter is bigger than discharge in centrifugal pump?

Suction Side Design:

A larger suction diameter directly reduces fluid velocity according to the continuity equation (Q = A × V), where flow rate Q remains constant. Lower velocities provide several critical benefits:

- Reduced friction losses: Darcy-Weisbach equation shows friction loss is proportional to velocity squared (hf ∝ V²), so halving velocity reduces losses by 75%
- NPSH preservation: Lower friction losses maintain higher pressure at the pump inlet, ensuring available NPSH exceeds required NPSH and preventing cavitation
- Improved suction performance: Reduced turbulence and pressure drops enhance pump efficiency and reliability

The suction side is pressure-limited since fluid relies on atmospheric or tank pressure to reach the pump. Any restriction that drops pressure below the fluid's v***r pressure at operating temperature will cause cavitation damage.

Discharge Side Design:

The discharge side operates at elevated pressures generated by the pump impeller, typically several times higher than suction pressure. This pressure margin provides flexibility in pipe sizing:

- Velocity tolerance: Higher pressures can overcome increased friction losses from smaller pipes without affecting pump operation
- Economic optimization: Smaller discharge piping reduces material costs, fitting expenses, and support structure requirements
- Space efficiency: Compact discharge routing simplifies plant layout and reduces installation complexity

Industry Standard Practice:

Typical velocity guidelines are 3-5 ft/s (0.9-1.5 m/s) on suction versus 5-10 ft/s (1.5-3.0 m/s) on discharge, reflecting this fundamental pressure differential between pump inlet and outlet conditions.

NFPA 72 (2025 Edition) – Spot-Type Smoke Detector Spacing & Location

✅ 1. Ceiling Height ≤ 12.2 m (40 ft)
â€ĸ Prescriptive spacing remains valid (traditional rule).
â€ĸ Typically, 9.1 m (30 ft) center-to-center spacing can be applied.
â€ĸ No additional CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) or performance-based analysis is required.

👉 In other words, for buildings up to 12.2 m, spot-type smoke detectors can be installed as before.

✅ 2. Ceiling Height > 12.2 m (40 ft)
â€ĸ Spot-type smoke detectors may still be used, but only with Performance-Based Design (PBD).
â€ĸ This requires analysis of:
â€ĸ Airflow & HVAC impact
â€ĸ Smoke movement dynamics
â€ĸ Temperature stratification
â€ĸ Fire load & occupancy type
â€ĸ Meaning, detectors cannot just be installed by “spacing tables”; scientific modeling is necessary.
