Key dates every seafarer should know! 🚢
Let’s be honest..when you’re out at sea, days blend together. Sunday feels exactly like Thursday, and the only date that usually matters is your crew-change day.
But there are a handful of dates on the global calendar that are actually worth paying attention to. They aren’t just random holidays; they are days meant to highlight the seafarers rights, our safety, and the reality of life at sea.
If you haven’t already, bookmark these 4 key maritime dates:
📅 May 18 – International Day for Women in Maritime
Shipping has been a male-dominated world for centuries, but things are shifting. This day isn’t just about a "thank you" post; it’s a push for actual change—better facilities, fair recruitment, and zero-tolerance for harassment so that more women can build long-term careers at sea.
📅 June 8 – World Oceans Day
The ocean is literally our office, our backyard, and our home for months at a time. This day is a quick reality check for all of us to keep sustainability in mind, reduce plastic waste onboard, and protect the waters we rely on.
📅 June 25 – Day of the Seafarer
If there’s one day we should all lean into, it’s this one. It’s the one day the world actually pauses to acknowledge the 1.9+ million seafarers keeping global trade alive. More importantly, it’s a massive platform used to fight for better crew welfare, shore leave access, and mental health support.
📅 Last Thursday of September – World Maritime Day
This is the IMO’s flagship day, and it usually focuses heavily on safety regulations, technological changes, and the future of shipping. It’s a good time to look at where the industry is heading—especially with green shipping and automation.
Does your vessel or company actually do anything to mark these days, or does the work just keep on rolling?
safe sailing to everyone currently on watch! 🌊
