In an insightful discussion with the Centre for Engineering Research and Dialogue (CERD), Prof. Dr. Mehedi Ahmed Ansary highlighted a critical yet often overlooked aspect of earthquake-resilient construction: the condition of the soil. While following the building code makes structures earthquake-resistant, neglecting soil characteristics can be disastrous. Every structure and soil layer has a natural oscillation period (natural frequency). When tall buildings are constructed on soft soil, their natural periods often match—a resonance phenomenon that drastically magnifies ground shaking and puts high-rises at severe risk, exactly as witnessed in the devastating 1985 Mexico City earthquake.

The key message is clear: strictly following building codes must go hand in hand with site-specific engineering measures. To prevent dangerous resonance, engineers must either improve and stabilize the soft soil or design the building to be stiffer, ensuring the natural period of the structure never matches that of the ground beneath it.
