Livestock – sheep and cattle breeding is a key element of agriculture/ animal husbandry in the South Caucasus and unfortunately, problems due to overgrazing occur almost everywhere.
ECOserve developed a pasture management approach that was taken over by its partner the Ministry of Agriculture (The methodology underlying the Pasture Passport will be integrated into the MoA's e-agriculture system).
The methodology encompasses data collection such as biomass (of grassland), erosion susceptibility, land cover etc. on which the carrying capacity for certain plots/ pastures will be determined. The approach is more sustainable than conventional pasture management with an uncontrolled number of grazing animals and not considering pasture conditions. MoA is using the approach provided by GIZ/ is piloting the approach in certain areas of Azerbaijan. Based on the lessons learned it is planned to apply the approach also in other regions of Azerbaijan.

In the first year of ECOserve, an assessment revealed that the project should focus on GAP. However, organic production was also assessed and is considered very important. Unfortunately, the demand for organic products in big cities such as Baku or G***a is rather low – due to higher products of organic products and because of close family ties to rural areas (and the perception of organically produced products there).
ECOserve supported female beekeepers in Kurdamir in their production of local and organic honey. Support was made with equipment, locally endemic trees and flowers (bee fodder plants) as well as training and capacity building in close cooperation with the Azerbaijani Beekeeper Association. Furthermore, the ECOserve project supported farmers in the pilot area in setting up greenhouse farms. In the framework of the activity, farmers were trained, greenhouses were installed, and advisory services were provided. Farmers use organic fertilizers to grow crops in the greenhouse.

Implementation and promotion of activities that do not harm the environment, especially biodiversity, have been the main activity direction of the ECOserve project:
- Implementation of minimum soil tillage methods to improve the activity of microorganisms in the soil
- the use of green cover plants and crop rotation to improve soil quality
- promoting the preparation and use of organic fertilizers, especially compost
- promoting and implementing Integrated Pest Management approaches in the fight against plant pests and w**ds
- the planting of flower strips and windbreak
- implementation of fertilizer rates based on soil analysis
- conducting w**d control based on the monitoring results

According to the recent IPCC scenarios, Azerbaijan will get a hotter and drier climate, and the country is more prone to natural disasters (flash floods, drought periods, and heavy rain events). The climate will also affect agriculture negatively. ECOserve was promoting a more diverse crop rotation, and a better soil composition due to minimum tillage, and recommended changing plants to more drought and heat-resistant varieties. Plant varieties resistant to local conditions, especially drought, were tested together with small farmers. On the edge of the pilot area of the project, a windbreak consisting of trees and shrubs adapted to the local landscape has been planted.

ECOserve Environmental Programme comes to an end in March 2023.

The environmental Knowledge-Attitude-Practice (KAP) survey was commissioned by the ECOserve Environmental Programme under the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Although the survey was conducted in 2019 we would like to use the remaining days to present some of our achievements, linked to six KAP Infographics…

ECOserve proqramı çərçivəsində Kənd Təsərrüfatı Nazirliyi ilə birlikdə kənd təsərrüfatı sektorunda sudan davamlı istifadə ilə bağlı məlumatlar toplanılmış, təhlillər aparılmış və suvarma suyuna tələbatın analizi ilə bağlı yeni yanaşma hazırlanmışdır. “Dayanıqlı kənd təsərrüfatı üçün su resurslarına tələbatın təhlili” modelləşdirilməsi üzrə bilik və bacarıqların artırılması məqsədilə beynəlxalq ekspert tərəfindən Kənd Təsərrüfatı Nazirliyində təlim keçirilmişdir. Təlimdə Nazirliyin Torpaqdan istifadəyə nəzarət şöbəsinin, Aqrar Tədqiqatlar Mərkəzinin, Azərkosmosun, Milli Aerokosmik Agentliyinin, ANAMA-nın mütəxəssisləri iştirak etmişdir.

Within the framework of the ECOserve program, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, data on sustainable use of water in the agricultural sector were collected, analyzed and a new approach to the analysis of irrigation water demand was developed. To increase knowledge and skills in "Analysis of demand for water resources for sustainable agriculture" modelling, training was held by an international expert at the Ministry of Agriculture. Specialists from the Ministry's Land Use Control Department, Agrarian Research Center, Azercosmos, National Aerospace Agency, and ANAMA participated in the training.

ECOserve layihəsi çərçivəsində növbəti ekskursiya Azərbaycan Dövlət Aqrar Universitetinin tələbələri üçün Agrodairy şirkəti ilə birlikdə təşkil edilmişdir. Ekskursiyanın məqsədi tələbələri Agrodairy şirkətinin Samux təsərrüfatında praktiki olaraq tətbiq olunan qabaqcıl kənd təsərrüfatı təcrübələri ilə tanış etmək olmuşdur. Ekskursiyada tələbələrə torpağın dayanıqlı idarə olunması, müasir suvarma sistemləri, minimum və sıfır becərmədə istifadə olunan maşın və aqreqatlar, sertifikatlı toxumlardan istifadənin üstünlükləri, növbəli əkin sxemi və s. haqqında məlumatlar verilmişdir.

Within the framework of the ECOserve project, the next excursion was organized together with the Agrodairy company for the students of the Azerbaijan State Agrarian University. The purpose of the excursion was to acquaint the students with advanced agricultural practices that are practically applied in the Samukh farm of the Agrodairy company. During the excursion, the students were given information about sustainable soil management, modern irrigation systems, machines and units used in minimum and zero cultivation, advantages of using certified seeds, rotation schemes and etc.

ECOserve layihəsi Kürdəmir rayonunda alternativ gəlir mənbələri yaratmaq, təbii ehtiyatlardan səmərəli istifadəni təşviq etmək və Covid-19 pandemiyasının fermerlərə təsirini azaltmaq məqsədilə kiçik fermerlərə istixanaların qurulmasında dəstək olub. Layihənin fəaliyyətində fəal iştirak edən fermerlər üçün 2021-ci ilin payızında istixanaların idarə olunması üzrə nəzəri və praktiki təlimlər keçirilib. Seçilmiş 20 fermerə istixana dəstləri - o cümlədən 2 növ suvarma sistemi, çiləyici, su çəni, bitki toxumları verilmişdir. 2022-ci ilin sentyabr ayında ECOserve-in əməkdaşları istixana təsərrüfatlarının səmərəliliyini yoxlamaq məqsədilə monitorinq keçirib. Fermerlər ötən il ərzində istixanada yetişdirilən göyərti və tərəvəzlə ailə ehtiyaclarını ödəməklə yanaşı, kəndlərində sataraq müəyyən gəlir əldə edirlər.

The ECOserve project in Kurdamir district has supported the small farmers with greenhouses in order to generate alternative income sources, promote the efficient use of natural resources, and reduce the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on farmers. Theoretical and practical trainings on greenhouse management were held in autumn 2021 for farmers actively participating in the activities of the project. Greenhouse-kits - including 2 types of irrigation systems, sprinkler, water tank, plant seeds – were given to 20 selected farmers. In September 2022, the ECOserve staff conducted monitoring for the purpose of checking the efficiency of greenhouse farms. During the last year, the farmers not only met their family needs with the greens and vegetables grown in the greenhouse, but also are earning a certain amount of income by selling them in their villages.

Kürdəmir rayonunda ECOserve və AFAQ layihələrinin birlikdə dəstəklədikləri arıçı qadın fermerlərin təsərrüfatlarında monitorinq həyata keçirilmişdir. Arıçı qadınların fəaliyyətdə olduqları 1 il ərzində çox uğurlu nailiyyətləri olmuşdur. Belə ki, fermerlər arı ailələrini ötən illə müqayisədə 2 dəfə artırmış, hər arı ailəsindən orta hesabla 12-15 kq bal süzmüş və arı ailələrini qış mövsümünə hazırlamağa başlamışdırlar. Arıların yem ehtiyatını gücləndirmək üçün fermerlərə verilən xaşa və arı otu bitkiləri, o cümlədən pavlovniya, evodiya və akasiya ağacları həyətyanı sahələrdə əkilmişdir. Qadınların arıçılıq fəaliyyəti istiqamətində dəstəklənməsi kənd yerlərində alternativ gəlir mənbələrinin formalaşması ilə yanaşı məşğulluğun artırılmasına və ətraf mühitin dayanıqlı idarə olunmasına böyük töhfə verməkdədir.

Monitoring was carried out in farms of female beekeeper farmers supported by ECOserve and AFAQ projects in Kurdamir district. Beekeeper women have had successful achievements during their 1 year of activity. So, the farmers have doubled their beehives compared to last year, extracted an average of 12-15 kg of honey from each beehives and started preparing their bee colonies for the winter season. To strengthen the nectar supply of bees, sainfoin and bee grass plants and paulownia, euodia and acacia trees, were planted in backyards. Supporting women in the direction of beekeeping activities, along with the formation of alternative sources of income in rural areas, makes a great contribution to increasing employment and sustainable management of the environment.
