While Jeremy's been walking corn in Iowa, Keeley was flying the Dawson Ag flag in Sydney

She spent two days at the 2026 Australian Precision Agriculture Symposium at the University of Sydney, hosted by SPAA, the Society of Precision Agriculture Australia. Yield maps, management zones, and a room full of people working out how to make precision ag actually pay on farm.

Dawson Ag is one of the consultants in the national SPAA and GRDC project on variable rate fertiliser, working with southern Queensland growers across the 2026 and 2027 seasons, so there was plenty to compare notes on.

Keeley's take: "A great opportunity to meet other industry members passionate about precision ag, and to hear grower feedback on their current operations and where they see PA going on their farms."

“Farming is Everyone’s Bread and Butter.”

That’s the sign over the door at The Machine Shed, the Iowa restaurant that calls itself a tribute to the American farmer. Over here, farming isn’t tucked away in the regions. It’s on the main street, in the stadium, and all through the university.

A big day on the Spraytec Ag Tour for Jeremy, research presentations at Iowa State University, time with a record-setting corn grower, a walk through the Alliant Energy Agriculture Innovation Lab at the ISU Research Park, a farm visit at Bush Family Farms in Boone, and corn at full height everywhere in between.

Plenty of ideas worth weighing up for our own paddocks. Farm Progress Show tomorrow, he’s been counting down for this one!

Real Iowa farming country.

Jeremy's in the US Midwest this week walking corn and soybean country on some of the deepest cropping soil in the world. Crops for miles in every direction, and plenty of good people talking farming.

Different country, same job: working out what makes soil perform, and bringing the useful ideas home to our paddocks.

He also squeezed in a stopover catch-up in LA with his mate, actor Angus Sampson.

Paraquat wasn't banned. But if you run a boom, the rules just changed in a way that matters.
The APVMA review has cut the maximum rate for conventional boom spraying to about 1 L/ha of a 250 g/L product. For context, we've rarely recommended less than 1.8 L/ha for reliable control of broadacre fallow weeds.
What that means on the ground:
Small, actively growing weeds should still be controllable
• Large fleabane, feathertop Rhodes, sowthistle, button grass and moisture-stressed weeds get much harder with paraquat alone
• Conventional boom spraying loses a lot of its punch at ~1 L/ha
The good news is optical spot spraying. The new labels keep a higher rate for spot sprayers, because only a fraction of the paddock is treated (sprayed area must stay under 30%). If you're running WEED-IT, Bilberry, John Deere See & Spray or WeedSeeker, you're in a much better spot.
A couple of things to know: there's a two-year transition, so what's in your shed on the old label is still usable. And the new labels bring enclosed mixing and loading, the end of backpack sprayers, and more PPE.

TRUCK DRIVER / MACHINERY OPERATOR WANTED - Goondiwindi, Tara or Meandarra

We're an independent family agronomy and soil testing business working farms from Dalby out to St George and down to the border, and we need an operator. Casual with an immediate start, building to full time as the soil testing side continues to grow.

The work: our Kelly Chains and Grizzly go out on dry hire, so you're the one picking them up from the last job, going over them, fixing what needs fixing and carting them to the next farm (MR licence needed). You'll also do soil sampling and drive the EM survey gear - we train all of that, you don't need to know anything about soil yet.

We're after someone handy on the tools, good around machinery, and extremely reliable and teachable.

You'll be away some nights. Travel, accommodation and meals are covered, and there's a work ute. We have a great team, plus, it's good money!

You'd want to be living around Goondiwindi, Tara or Meandarra already - no relocation.

Jeremy’s spent the week running pasture visits across western Queensland. Longreach, Winton, Cloncurry and everywhere in between.

Pasture condition, species mix, soil testing on the spot. Plenty of windscreen time, plenty of good country, magic sunsets and getting to have a beer at the Burke and Will Campdraft with Harry Dawson made the drive worth it.

Always good to get out west.

What's an EM machine and why does it cost less to use one than to spread fertiliser blindly?

Electromagnetic surveys map your soil's electrical conductivity, which correlates with moisture, clay content, and salinity. The result is a high-res map of your paddock's actual soil variability. No guessing.

From there, variable rate lime, gypsum and fertiliser plans pay for themselves fast.

Victrato has now finished its first full commercial season in Australia. With winter planting five to seven weeks away, here's the honest breakdown for our country.

25 NSW DPI trial sites, 5 seasons. Average crown rot yield loss falls from 21.5% to 4.9% with seed treatment. It works. It doesn't replace rotation, and it won't pay on every paddock.

End of a long day soil testing out at Tara - and the dry one is well and truly on.

With urea near double what it was earlier this year and no certainty about when planting rains will arrive, a lot of growers are sitting on their hands right now. That's completely understandable. But the data you collect in the dry is exactly what helps you make the right call when conditions do improve - what nitrogen is sitting in your profile, what your starting position actually is, whether this paddock justifies the input cost at current prices.

We're still out on farm. Still doing the work. Because when it does break, you'll want to move fast.
