Whether we're testing new feedstocks, collecting emissions data, running our continuous carbonisation systems or manufacturing equipment for local or global projects, there's always something happening on site at Pyrocal!

At nearly 45 tonnes, this latest bulk load of premium, engineered Terix Biochar, is destined for Central Queensland to be used in a large-scale macadamia orchard trial.

Macadamias are a great example of how permanent trees and biochar can work together to build soil health and long-term carbon outcomes.

We look forward to sharing what we learn from this trial!

Global investors like Apple are pouring money into Queensland’s macadamia orchards because of the significant carbon benefits these long lived tree systems can deliver.

Read the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)'s full article - https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2026-05-11/tech-giant-apple-invests-macadamia-orchard-carbon-credits/106631794

Now imagine extending those carbon gains even further by converting macadamia nut shells, which would normally be incinerated or dumped, into high value biochar with soil, carbon, and productivity benefits.

That’s engineered carbon removal at its best and its catching on quickly. www.pyrocal.com.au

Biochar Trial: Biochar in Macadamia Seedling Media

At the end of 2025, we supplied our Terix Biocharchar (made onsite at our Toowoomba facility) to MacQ Nursery for a trial running through to June 2026.

A major supplier of macadamia seedlings in the Wide Bay region, MacQ’s Nursery Manager Glen Rieck is testing how different inclusion rates, particle sizes, and activation methods (including liquid fish and seaweed) influence early-stage plant development using our premium, engineered biochar which is designed for consistency and performance.

Why biochar at this stage is important:

• Improves moisture retention in the growing media
• Increases nutrient availability right where seedlings need it most
• Supports beneficial microbial activity for stronger root development
• Enhances aeration and structure, reducing stress during early growth

These benefits don’t stop in the nursery. When transplanted, the biochar travels with the seedling, continuing to support root health and soil performance as the tree establishes in the field.

Early signs are promising and the seedlings are thriving. We’ll keep you updated as the trial progresses.

🔸What 10+ Years of Carbonisation Has Taught Us🔸Three key elements

After 10+ years working in carbonisation and biochar, we’ve learned that a few fundamentals really matter:

🔸 Know your feedstock
Understand what you have, how it behaves and how consistent it is.

🔸 Understand the process
Thermal treatment is different to a typical water treatment plant. O&M, staffing and maintenance all need to be considered early.

🔸 Understand the value
Biochar isn’t just an output. Its value depends on how you plan to use it and your target market.

For biomass projects, the same principles apply, along with one key difference:

🔸 Heat recovery
Using recovered energy, such as for pre-drying, can significantly improve project returns.

Get these elements right and everything that follows becomes easier.

With more than a decade of hands-on experience, we work closely with utilities, councils and growers early to assess feedstocks, plan operations and unlock the value of biochar from day one.

Circular thinking🔸The Phosphate Crunch

Kamoa Capital do a good job in this story explaining why phosphate has become one of the most strategic inputs in global food production. We still rely on new mines, even though they are slow, capital‑intensive and exposed to geopolitical risks.

Water utilities have part of the solution. By converting biosolids into transportable, phosphorus‑rich biochar through high‑temperature carbonisation, we can recover local nutrients, destroy contaminants and build a domestic fertiliser stream that complements rock phosphate instead of competing with it.

In a world of fragile phosphate supply chains, circular phosphorus from biosolids should be on every food‑security agenda.

🔸What 10+ Years of Carbonisation Has Taught Us🔸Maintenance Matters

Running our own carbonisation system in Toowoomba for the past decade has shown us where maintenance needs to be easier, faster and more practical.

We've focused on two areas:

🔸 Components
We’ve redesigned wearing parts in high-temp zones to be modular, longer lasting and light enough to handle by hand so they’re quicker to replace.

🔸 Heat exchanger
We’ve added access doors so all heat-exchange surfaces can be cleaned without disassembly. The target cleaning down time is around 30 minutes.

Everything runs better when maintenance is easier and quicker!

🔸What 10+ Years of Carbonisation Has Taught Us🔸FEEDSTOCKS

For more than a decade, we’ve tested everything from nutshells and woodchips to manures and multiple biosolids types.

Each behaves differently impacting biochar quality, heat recovery and, most importantly, operational stability.

After 10+ years of carbonisation, one of our biggest lessons is that feedstock drives performance.

Get it right, and you get stable, predictable, bankable outcomes.

It’s all about what comes out of our stack. 🏭

We recently completed our quarterly emissions testing, and the results speak for themselves.

Measured across key harmful air pollutants at our stack, our emissions were well below regulatory limits reinforcing the strength of our emissions control system and our commitment to environmental compliance.

We also use this testing to validate our continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS), ensuring the real-time data our customers rely on is accurate and our equipment is correctly calibrated.

Every feedstock produces a different stack output which is why we build customised emissions control systems tailored to the specific limits of each client.

Our R&D continues to deliver breakthroughs in emissions control.

🔸What 10+ Years of Carbonisation Has Taught Us🔸TECHNOLOGY EVOLUTION

From a simple hearth to advanced carbonisation technology, over the past decade Pyrocal’s Continuous Carbonisation Technology (CCT) has transformed to become:

🔸Fully automated, running unattended for long periods
🔸Built with safeguards and shutdowns for maximum reliability
🔸Focused on heat recovery and emissions control

The result? Greater operational efficiency, stronger compliance, and systems that set the benchmark globally.

This is the first insight from our 10+ Years of Carbonisation series.
