Biochar in action: Record growth for Pyrocal's Terix Biochar🌱

In addition to manufacturing and selling world-leading carbonisation technology for more than a decade, Pyrocal has also been producing and supplying engineered, high-performance Terix Biochar from our R&D facility in Toowoomba, Queensland.

We’ve been producing and selling biochar for more than a decade and have seen first-hand how the market has evolved from a niche, emerging product category into a recognised input across agriculture, growing media, gardens, stockfeed, sports turf, and construction materials.

The chart below shows our biochar volume of sales over the past four years, delivering a 272% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2022/23 to 2025/26.

This level of growth over just four years reflects several factors:

🔸Growing customer confidence in Terix Biochar product quality and consistency.
🔸Increased awareness of biochar’s performance benefits across multiple applications.
🔸Stronger demand for engineered and custom blends tailored to specific uses.
🔸The growing need for locally supplied, technically supported solutions, backed by Pyrocal’s carbonisation expertise.

If you’d like to see an example of biochar’s impact in the field, read our Glenelg Golf Club biochar trial case study. https://www.pyrocal.com.au/case-study-glenelg-golf-club-biochar-trial/

Whether we're testing new feedstocks, collecting emissions data, running our continuous carbonisation systems or manufacturing equipment for local or global projects, there's always something happening on site at Pyrocal!

At nearly 45 tonnes, this latest bulk load of premium, engineered Terix Biochar, is destined for Central Queensland to be used in a large-scale macadamia orchard trial.

Macadamias are a great example of how permanent trees and biochar can work together to build soil health and long-term carbon outcomes.

We look forward to sharing what we learn from this trial!

Global investors like Apple are pouring money into Queensland’s macadamia orchards because of the significant carbon benefits these long lived tree systems can deliver.

Read the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)'s full article - https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2026-05-11/tech-giant-apple-invests-macadamia-orchard-carbon-credits/106631794

Now imagine extending those carbon gains even further by converting macadamia nut shells, which would normally be incinerated or dumped, into high value biochar with soil, carbon, and productivity benefits.

That’s engineered carbon removal at its best and its catching on quickly. www.pyrocal.com.au

If you’re managing macadamias or other perennial crops and want to explore carbonising your residues, we’d love to connect.

Biochar Trial: Biochar in Macadamia Seedling Media

At the end of 2025, we supplied our Terix Biocharchar (made onsite at our Toowoomba facility) to MacQ Nursery for a trial running through to June 2026.

A major supplier of macadamia seedlings in the Wide Bay region, MacQ’s Nursery Manager Glen Rieck is testing how different inclusion rates, particle sizes, and activation methods (including liquid fish and seaweed) influence early-stage plant development using our premium, engineered biochar which is designed for consistency and performance.

Why biochar at this stage is important:

• Improves moisture retention in the growing media
• Increases nutrient availability right where seedlings need it most
• Supports beneficial microbial activity for stronger root development
• Enhances aeration and structure, reducing stress during early growth

These benefits don’t stop in the nursery. When transplanted, the biochar travels with the seedling, continuing to support root health and soil performance as the tree establishes in the field.

Early signs are promising and the seedlings are thriving. We’ll keep you updated as the trial progresses.
