We are one week out from .label.invitational and I’m currently putting together the biggest display Engineered to Slide has ever had.

Join me in celebrating 20 years of past, present and future projects at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre this Sunday the 1st of Feb.

See you there.

I never get tired of this view and with the 20th anniversary of ETS rolling round I wanted to get the old Hilux out there again to hopefully spark some inspiration in the future generations of budding builders.

I got back from summer vacation with a long list of things to do, I did a lot of work on the trailer with an internal ramp system to allow me to carry the plinths I built for this to be displayed on.

I was accepted into the Elite Hall at the and used this as a pre run for the upcoming .label.invitational show where I’ll be putting on the biggest display yet. I’ll share more details on that in the coming days.

Once BlackLabel is wrapped up I’ll put this back on the dyno to clean up the tune, swing some laps and enjoy the fruits of my labour again.

Thanks Colac Motorfest for the entry into the elite hall and thanks to all the people that had good things to say about seeing the Hilux at the show.

With a refresh underway on the Hilux I thought I’d see what these big VOLK Racing forged magnesium centerlocks fitted with Porsche Cup slicks would look like.

They won’t be staying on but it’s cool to see a different wheel on it.

The refresh has involved making a new turbo manifold, new wastegate, new dump and screamer pipe, new intercooler plumbing, intake plumbing and some extra sensors.

Looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of this.

Life’s good and motorcycles are better, clawed back some time for myself lately and joined .au and to build my beloved R Nine T Scrambler into a bike that can (hopefully) hold its own against the brand new BMW R12 GS launching in the next few weeks. The brief was to build one of the new R12s but I had unfinished business with this bike and I wanted to continue the good times with a bike that’s given me plenty already. I’ve filmed a 5 part series on this build and you can hit the link in my profile to get into it. I can’t wait to show you the finished product and I can’t wait to catch up with my fellow builders and enjoy a day on the flat track to put these boxxers through their paces.

I’ve had a list of things to do to the S13 for quite some time, the car shares the sequential transmission with the Hilux and because the engines in and out constantly I wanted to simplify things in the mounting department so I could pull the engine out and still have the car roll around. This meant simplifying the x member so it detaches without the LCA’s being removed, the engines plate solved that by mounting the engine to the chassis rails, the second was the oil pump mount, I wanted to lower that and have it nice and sturdy, the engine plate solved that, the third was the lack of heat generated by the NA motor so I made an electric water pump using the stock impeller so I incorporated that into the engine plate too. Ontop of that (or below it I should say) is the sump, I wanted to remake the dry sump with some nicer pickups and I’m still working that out. I scanned the block, drew all these parts in CAD and then water jetted them out of plate, all relatively easily once I had my dimensions verified by templates. This was a good functioning engine/ bay before and now it’s much better to work on. Still got some finishing touches to do but I thought it’s worth showing the progress.

S15 update, a lot of work/ learning/ designing and developing thoughts and ideas. There’s always that thought in the back of my mind that this is too much for one man in a garage but I can’t help but persist with it, I’m wired that way.

Nothing I’ve ever done has involved CAD up until a few years ago, it’s a love hate relationship, I love the fact I can conceptually design something out, figure it won’t work and then press delete rather than wasting expenses materials. I hate it because you have endless options to second guess your approach to something which leads to a design merry go round that uses up valuable time.

All in all I’m trying to utilise the VK45’s Indycar strengths to minimise frontal chassis requirements, my already completed roll cage, a slightly longer wheelbase, a much wider track, and enough room to develop an aerodynamic package.

The biggest thing right now is the transaxle gearbox I want to run, I’ve looked at every available option here and might be close to settling on one which will finalise the motor angle, the suspension kinematic and the overall design of the rear chassis section.

This is high level motorsports stuff that I have no right to be involved in but I’m driven by the idea of sunny afternoon laps around Phillip Island in a car that’s going to be extremely capable of respectable lap times.

It’s been a journey and I’m still at the start line but the better the design the less work will be required to pull it all together.

Stay tuned 🏁

Welcome home.

After a few years in a shipping container the Hilux is back, I used its sequential gearbox in the PS13 which I’ve since replaced so it’s time to put it all back together.

This project taught me a lot of things and since building it over a decade ago I’ve learned a fair amount more. Over the past few years I had plans to remake the chassis and suspension with a vision of it becoming something I’d be more proud of.

Having it back home again and spending time on it makes me realise how important this cars been for me and I don’t intend to change it, a true timestamp of a car that inspired many throughout our journey’s.

Next year will be Engineered To Slides 20th anniversary and I am planning on doing something special, I’ll spend this year working towards it, so stay tuned.

Sunday at .label.invitational good vibes!

For every show that I’ve trailered my cars to I’ve been envious of those who drive to the show, this year I was able to just that, typical Melbourne weather meant a cold trip up from Geelong but the car was faultless and the show went off.

I appreciated all the friendly faces, catching up with friends I only see at events, meeting new people and chatting to those who got into cars from the stuff I’ve posted in the past.

Thanks to all the Black Label crew 🖤 till next year!
