Hands up if you've heard of UpShop! 🙋 🙋‍♂️

They're another SEE-Change group (there are a lot of us! 💚 ) and they accept donations of unfinished sewing projects, along with unneeded craft and haberdashery items, to save them from landfill 🧵 🧶

Donated items are prepared for sale, and made available at their Kambah shop - the shop is open Fridays (9:30am - 3pm) and Saturdays (9am - 12pm).

And we hope your rockin' Saturday involves the Toolbox in some way - our main Watson location is open tomorrow (Saturday, October 17) between 10am and 1pm, and the Tool Bus is on the road, hanging out at Weston between 10am and 11am.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY TOOLBOX
Short version: The Community Toolbox is a "library of things." Members can borrow more than 1,200 items that they may not want to buy (and store!) themselves. We're part of SEE Change and run 100% by volunteers 💚

Longer version: A lot of our items available for loan are for DIY and home maintenance (think lawnmowers, saws, pressure washers, etc), but we have a wide range of other items including craft equipment, kitchenware, camping gear, books, and more. We're ideal for things that are expensive, bulky, niche, and/or that you may only need a few times a year, or even less often. Members pay an annual fee - there's a sliding scale so it's affordable for all income levels - and then can access the entire range of items to borrow.

The Toolbox is currently open for borrowing and returning on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, and we also have a Tool Bus service where pre-reserved items get loaded into our electric van and driven to specific locations for pick-up.

We exist for multiple reasons - the top amongst them being sustainability. If we're able to share items and resources, fewer need to be produced, sold, and stored - and chucked into landfill when they break. That saves us all money, and also contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable world for all of us.

What's Dave doing now?! 😃

Dave had a whole lot of chilis left over last autumn when he'd finished harvesting everything from his vege garden. He couldn't use them right then, so he threw them in a box and put them in the freezer. Now that he has some breathing space, he's going to make his own chili powder!

Dave slices up all his chili peppers. He has some mild ones and some hot ones, and he's just going to mix them all up.

He puts the slices into the fancy schmancy new Toolbox dehydrator. It has TEN shelves, so an absolute ton of space, and some handy silicone mesh mats (that stop things sticking) to cover the shelves. He dehydrates the chilis for hours on a pretty low heat (52 degrees) until they're absolutely crispy.

Then he pours them into a little coffee grinder and grinds them up. It only takes a few moments to reduce them all to powder then hooray! his own custom pepper powder. And all those chilis from the first pic (plus quite a few more) fit into that one little jar!

You can make powder from all kinds of fruits and veges. But of course you can also stop before things get quite that crisp! You can add dehydrated veges to things like soup and casseroles, and dehydrated fruit makes a lovely snack - with no added sugar. Pro tip: mango slices with the Mexican spice blend Tajin added before dehydrating begins. Absolute heaven!

This is Rin Rin. She's a Tool Bus customer 🥳

Instead of driving to Watson, she met the Tool Bus at one of its stops, and picked up this studio joiner (for making picture frames).She can return it to the Tool Bus, or back to the main location in Watson - whichever is more convenient.

Be like Rin Rin! 🤩

Current Tool Bus stops are:
WESTON (Saturdays, 10am - 11am; reserve online before 9am)
BELCONNEN (Wednesdays, 6:30pm - 7:30pm; reserve online before 5:30pm)

We're so sorry, but there will be NO Tool Bus services tomorrow (Saturday, October 10) - unfortunately we don't have a volunteer driver available 😭

If you had a reservation for Weston, it will be transferred so you can pick up at the Toolbox main location - 76 Federal Highway, Watson. Our usual entry (off Zelling Street) is closed while some construction takes place, so go around the back to Aspinall Street and look for the signs.

Sorry about that! Normal Tool Bussing resumes on Wednesday, October 14.

At the Haig Park Sustainability Markets a week or so back, our sister org WasteLess brought along their reusables and washing up stations, and managed to help market-goers avoid over 300 single-use items. That's right, just by some really simple changes - grabbing a mug from the mug wall when getting a coffee at a food truck instead of taking a single-use throw-away cup, for example - some significant landfill was avoided.

Now just imagine this expanded to events and festivals across Canberra 🤩

And WasteLess is growing! They're looking for volunteers for their next two events:

Never been to the Community Toolbox location? Well, how about a quick tour? 😃

You can find us at 76 Federal Highway in Watson (pic 1). We rent space from YWAM, but we're not affiliated with them. We ARE a little tricky to find on their property, though, if you've never been there before - they have a lot of buildings and it can be hard to find us! Enter via the temporary entrance on Aspinall Street (our sandwich board will be out kerbside when we're open), and then follow the dirt driveway back toward the highway. Our building is marked with various signs and logos.

Once inside, the many MANY (now over 1,300 😮 ) items available for loan are arranged on shelves (pics 2 and 3). We added a shipping container earlier this year for some extra storage, but the majority of items are still in the main building.

While technically you CAN just roll up and take a look, we highly encourage you - we might even beg you 🙏 - to look at the online inventory and make a reservation before you arrive ✔️ That way, our hardworking and friendly volunteers have time to assemble your items and have them ready on the reservation shelf (pic 4). That's less stress and rushing about for them, and a quicker, more streamlined experience for you.

What's Dave doing now??? 😀

We're all being urged to clean our gutters as a preparation for bushfire season and for storm season. And the Toolbox gutter scoop is just the right implement for the job. It's narrow and long and can gather up a lot more leaves and dirt than - well, pretty much anything else.

A gutter scoop isn't expensive, but let's face it, this isn't something you need every weekend (unless your interests are - shall we say - rather niche?) So why not use that hook in your laundry or shed for something you need more often, and borrow ours from the Toolbox once or twice a year when your gutters need scooping?
