Tropical Cyclone Alfred
Scenic Rim Regional Council advises people on the Scenic Rim to PREPARE TO TAKE SHELTER tonight by 6.00pm.
Tropical Cyclone Alfred is moving slowly towards the Queensland coast. Weather is getting worse. Expect destructive winds and significant flooding. Check the Disaster Flood Risk Map. If you are in a risk area, decide now where you will take shelter.
In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. For emergency help in floods and storms, call the QLD SES on 132 500 or download the SES Assistance QLD App.
What are we expecting?
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) advises Tropical Cyclone Alfred is moving towards the southeast Queensland coast and wind, rain and flooding are expected to increase this evening.
They have advised:
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 120 kilometres per hour are developing near the coast. These DAMAGING WINDS are forecast to persist during Friday before easing during late Sunday morning.
DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS of up to 155 kilometres per hour may develop as the cyclone approaches the coast.
HEAVY RAINFALL may develop from Friday night. It may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING may occur near and south of the cyclone centre as Alfred approaches and crosses the coast. Separate Severe Weather Warning and Flood Watches are current for southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales.
The cyclone has slowed down and this is making the severe weather more difficult to predict. Conditions will be dangerous as it gets closer to land. You can expect:
• Winds are forecast to get stronger and high winds will continue through Friday.
• Very strong winds that could knock down trees, powerlines, and blow roofs off.
• Power, phone, internet, and water might stop working for a long time.
• Heavy rain will continue, which could cause flooding, especially after the cyclone crosses the coast.
What you need to do:
• Find out how to ready for a tropical cyclone at the Get Ready Queensland website (Get Prepared) and make an emergency kit.
•Find the strongest and safest room in the building you are in. This will be away from big windows. It could be a bathroom, walk-in wardrobe, or hallway. Shelter here when the tropical cyclone comes.
•Cover windows with plywood, a mattress or heavy blanket. Shelter under a mattress if the roof comes off.
•Put your emergency kit in your safe room.
•Do not use gas or generators inside. Fumes can be deadly.
•Fill your car with fuel or charge it, and park it undercover. Do not park under a tree.
•Store or tie down outside items, like caravans, boats, trailers, outdoor furniture, gas bottles, toys and play equipment.
•Move outdoor furniture inside or sink it in your pool so it doesn’t fly around in strong winds.
•Boil and conserve water for drinking, cooking, and bathing, in case water supplies are impacted.
•Be ready to turn off power, solar, water and gas to your house if you can and if it is safe.
•Check your family, friends and neighbours know what to do. Help them if you can.
If you have been told to evacuate or you do not feel safe in your home, ensure you are in a safer place by 6.00pm, ideally with family or friends. Places of Refuge should be a last resort, shelter with family or friends first. If you are not in a flood risk area, your best option is to shelter in your home.
Places of Refuge are open at:
Vonda Youngman Centre, 2-4 Knoll Road, Tamborine Mountain
