Jacaranda takes its inspiration from the jacaranda tree, our iconic spring tree with its distinctive branching form and seasonal canopy of lilac-blue blossoms.

The curved canopy and cantilevered form were developed to create more than shade alone. Like the tree that inspired it, Jacaranda is intended to become part of the experience, not just part of the infrastructure.

Some projects leave a mark far beyond their footprint.

The Queens Park Ceremonial, Healing and Remembrance Place in Ipswich began as a conversation about creating a culturally significant gathering space, and ultimately led to the design of our new Jacaranda shade shelter.

The original custom design pushed us into new territory and on launch it garnered enormous interest across our landscape design customers and peers, confirming for us that there was a growing demand for shade structures that could provide architectural impact without the complexity of starting from scratch.

Today, Jacaranda is a reminder that some of the best product development doesn't start with a product roadmap. It starts with a customer, a vision and a willingness to explore what's possible together.

Around the world, global projects are demonstrating that shade is becoming architecture.

Historically, a shelter's job was to provide protection but today, designers increasingly expect infrastructure to create identity, support gathering, define a destination, tell a story and contribute to the character of a place. That's a lot of heavy lifting for a shade structure!

Our CEO Martin Rowland explored the territory Jacaranda sits within. While it may not be as large as the Metropol Parasol or as iconic as the Supertree Grove, it responds to the same design movement: the increasing expectation that public infrastructure should contribute to the experience of a space, not simply occupy it.

"What you don't see are the substantial design refinements, engineering collaborations and problem-solving that were required across its development to transform it from ambitious concept to design realisation to market-ready product."

When Head of Product Design, Wesley Kirk, and his team were greenlit to evolve a one-off custom piece to be ready for market, it led to the development of an entirely new structural platform. Capable of supporting straight, concave and convex forms through a single engineered system, they shared some of the design thinking, engineering challenges and lessons learned throughout the development process of the new Jacaranda™ shade shelter in a new article.
