Buying a forklift? Ask these 3 questions before you sign.

The wrong forklift costs more than the right one – over its lifetime, sometimes by tens of thousands. Before you commit, make sure you've asked:

✅ Is this the right capacity? Not the biggest load you'll ever lift – the load you lift most days. Oversizing costs upfront and on running cost.

✅ Is this the right fuel type for your site? Diesel for heavy outdoor. LPG for mixed use. Electric or lithium for indoor and multi-shift. The wrong fuel means wasted running cost or missed productivity.

✅ What's the total cost over 5 years? Purchase price is only part of it. Add fuel, service, parts and downtime – the cheapest forklift to buy is rarely the cheapest to run.

Winter's on. Is your forklift ready?

Cold weather changes how forklifts perform, especially first thing in the morning. A few quick checks can save you a breakdown callout, a flat battery on shift, or a slip on a wet dock.

Five things worth checking this winter:

✅ Battery – cold reduces capacity.
✅ Diesel starts – warm up before load work, not during.
✅ Hydraulic warm-up – give the machine 5-10 minutes to circulate before you start lifting heavy loads.
✅ Tyre pressure – cold air means lower pressure.
✅ Site surfaces – wet or frosty concrete is slippery. Reduce speed, avoid sudden stops and turns.
