We recently marked an important milestone at Greenbank Training Area for our MTR2 project.

Together with the Department of Defence: Capital Facilities and Infrastructure Branch (CFI) and GHD, we hosted a Smoking Ceremony and traditional dance performed by the Yuggera People to launch our latest works.

It was a privilege to be joined by Defence representatives and dignitaries for this occasion. The ceremony provided a moment of reflection and respect, ensuring we move forward on this project with a clear path and a deep appreciation for the Yuggera country we are working on.

We are looking forward to seeing this project progress.

Exploring Identity & Connection 👷‍♀️👷‍♂️

Today, we deepened our understanding of identity and culture, exploring how our heritage shapes our future. The day kicked off with an inspiring Powerlink tour, where students learned about the crucial role of energy infrastructure and how it connects to sustainable solutions for our communities.
Next, we had the privilege of attending the Civil IQ session, led by Mark Hausfeld (Design Engineer & Director - Principal). Mark shared his extensive experience in civil engineering, offering valuable insights into the industry and discussing the projects he has worked on. His examples showed how engineering and design play a pivotal role in building sustainable infrastructure and shaping our communities.

Monday, 14th July, we kicked off the QUT Program with a powerful start. Students began their journey by connecting with culture, identity, and purpose - laying the foundation to walk two paths: one of cultural pride, the other of academic and career growth. It's about knowing who you are, where you come from, and where you are going.

The ADM 30 Under 30 Awards were created to recognise the outstanding contributions made by individuals under the age of 30 to the ongoing support of the Australian Defence Force Industries. Brodie Rupp first joined WSU Civil in 2020, showing off his personal drive and dedication, taking on a full time role while still studying Civil Engineering at James Cook University. Upon graduating in 2022, he continued to grow his knowledge and skills, positively impacting his colleagues and fellow engineers.

Brodie’s exceptional performance quickly earned him a promotion to Project Engineer, where he successfully delivered multiple projects at Lavarack Barracks, Townsville RAAF Base, Townsville Field Training Area, and Mount Stuart Training Area. His notable contributions include managing the Hand Over Take Over (HOTO) process for the region.

Oliver Parlon, NQ Operations Manager, praised Brodie, saying, “Brodie takes pride in his work and ensures the WSU team provides quality solutions for Defence personnel by improving bases and training areas for everyday operations and exercises. Brodie understands the importance of well-maintained facilities and considers his team’s strong communication skills crucial to supporting Defence Industries.”

Beyond his project work, Brodie voluntarily represents WSU Civil at University Industry Nights, presenting on Civil Engineering topics and participates in Open Days, sharing his own experiences and opportunities for current students. He has been a key part of WSU Civil’s initiatives to combine cultural awareness with civil engineering, creating pathways for Indigenous youth into the civil industry. Brodie also works to expand university access, providing more students with exposure to industry opportunities, while mentoring WSU Civil students and graduate engineers.

Brodie expressed his gratitude for the recognition and nomination, saying that the award reflects his commitment to improving the Defence Industry. When he found out he was a finalist, Brodie felt honoured and thankful for the support from WSU Civil and the help from his mentors, colleagues, and clients.

In March, WSU Civil will support Brodie at the ADM 30 Under 30 Awards Ceremony in Canberra to celebrate all finalists. WSU Civil is incredibly proud of his achievements and confident that Brodie’s values and abilities will inspire others, continuing a legacy of excellence within Defence Industry Services.

Flash back to last week, when we hosted our very first cultural immersion program with 9 students from QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and JCU: James Cook University, Australia.

The week long program saw the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander engineering students spend 5 days learning more about their cultural roots, and how it intertwines in our business.

We will share how the week played out over the coming days, but we'd like to say a big thank you to some friends of ours; Ben Prest from FKG Group for talking to the students about the project at the Kerwin Police Station, and Shamrock Civil Engineering for allowing us to visit their site at Australian Institute of Marine Science and sharing some valuable Q&A time with their site crew.
