Recently iM3 had the pleasure of working together with the Veterinary and Animal Care team at Sydney Zoo, to provide equipment necessary for a dental procedure on Mai the ​40-year-old Sumatran Orangutan.

Mai has been at Sydney Zoo since its opening and has been a regular amongst visitors. Being an older individual it’s important for the zoo to proactively manage her health which includes routine health checks under anaesthesia. The animal care staff play an integral role in facilitating the conditioning for these procedures which allowed the team to hand-inject Mai with her sedative medication, ensuring the process starts of smoothly.

A team of specialists looked after Mai and while under anaesthesia, she received radiographs, a complete physical exam, bloods were taken for routine testing, and an abdominal ultrasound. A thorough dental examination revealed that she also required some dental extractions, which was successfully completed by the team.

Mai’s recovery has been fantastic, and she is back to eating her favourite food such as browse and fresh vegetables with the occasional nut.
