If you build in Sydney, you know someone who worked for Bathla.
They are now in voluntary administration owing $3.4 billion. Two hundred projects in limbo. Around 2,000 homes half built. And subbies sitting in the unsecured creditor line for $130 million.
One subbie told the media he is owed between $700,000 and $900,000. Because of that he now owes the ATO about $150,000 and his suppliers another $200,000, and those suppliers have stopped giving him credit.
That is how one developer going under becomes ten subbies going under. The money does not disappear at the top. It disappears at the bottom.
We have written up what happened, why it happened, and the practical stuff. What to do if you are exposed, what your rights are under the Security of Payment Act, and the warning signs to watch for on your next client.
