Flashback Friday®
We're back to 1956 and Chrysler were increasing their local manufacturing of vehicles in Australia. Most notably all the components had to meet the high Chrysler quality standards. One such item was the upper and lower control arm for Plymouth, Dodge and DeSoto passenger cars. Lincoln Electric were called to investigate the possibility of using the Hidden Arc Welding Process (now known as Sub Arc Welding) on these components. After trials it was determined that all requirements in welding speed and quality could be met. Being fully automated the process had considerable repeatability and economies of scale that could be used on other components. The images show the welded control arm and an operator mounting the control arm for welding. Fourteen sleeps till Santa arrives. Happy Flashback Friday.

Flashback Friday®
It’s August 1957 and in Port Kembla the steel industry is expanding. Part of the expansion includes a contract for 22 tons of steel ductwork. The Lupton Engineering Company of Revesby took advantage of Jetweld, a new class of powdered metal coated electrodes which increased welding speeds up to 50%. The estimated cost savings on this project were close to 30%, with weld quality and consistency so high that no repair or additional finishing was required. The image shows the welding operator completing final fl**ge welds on a typical duct section. Happy Flashback Friday!

Flashback Friday®
October 1956, the new Lincolnweld Automatic Welder Announced. The LAF.3 simplifies special purpose set-ups, with features that include an automatic flux valve which provides greater and more 'as-needed' flux coverage and a far wider speed range in the travel carriage. Welding head construction and development had meant a wider range of adjustments are available allowing easy accommodation of any weld joint. The LAF.3 is supplied with standard Lincolnweld contact jaws or with the new contact nozzle assembly as shown in the image. With new circuit design the LAF.3 allows for hot or cold starting and a choice of constant potential or variable voltage power source, giving desired welding conditions for any thickness material.
